Default Best Pro Tools LE version for old PowerBook G4?

Hi,

What do you think it's the best Pro Tools LE version for an old aluminium PowerBook G4 / 1.25 GHz / 1 GB RAM running Tiger? Taking in account performance and stability.

Pro Tools LE 6.9.2?

Pro Tools LE 7.3.1?

Pro Tools LE 7.4?

Other?

Thank you!

You can run 7.4 on a Power PC G4. One of my computers is running that and it works fine.

I'd suggest more RAM.

Hi, thank you for your input!

Well, the problem is that this notebook can't be expanded anymore. One of the RAM sockets isn't working anymore (I read this is a common problem with some PowerBooks) so it only has 1 x 1 GB SODIMM.

Cheers!

How ironic, I was about to ask this very question today as well.Decided to use an old ibook g4 1.33 for tracking purposes only instead of hauling my mac mini rig around.

My thoughts were to stay at 7.1, I just need 16 solid tracks will little to no plug ins.Digi 002r + Presonus D8, said Ibook and some mics is all I need.

Was not meaning to hijack, hopefully some others will add more.

Hi,

Yes, that's exactly the use for this old Powerbook G4 + original Mbox. For tracking. I guess it's more than enough for that task, but also I would like to use it for some editing and light mixing. In the future I will buy something better (MacBook Pro) but now this is working fine and just don't want to throw it away.

Maybe I'll try the 7.4 version but I remember reading about using more resources than previous versions.

Thanks!

Yes, it does. Version 6.x uses less than 7.x. Version 5.x uses much less than 6.x but I guess you don't wanna go there. Also, I think there was a jump in one of the 6.-versions that used notably more than the previous one. 6.7...? Maybe....?

So... What 6.x version would be better, balancing features and resources' usage?

Hmm... just checked the Pro Tools compatibility chart, and the only 6.x version that could run in Tiger is the 6.9.2 (or 6.8.1 with Mbox 2, I now remember that "special" version just for that interface). All previous 6.x versions are for Phanter.

Is it ok? Anyone?

Thank you!

Yes it does but to go back to something like 6.9 which is the good 6.x version still loses a lot of functionality.
I would say that 7.4 on that machine is the way to go.

Shame bout that ram slot.

7.3.1 is solid as a rock. Lots of folks I know with G4s are hanging there and perfectly happy.
