DVD-RAM from DIVA formated FAT16 - any ideas anyone?
Hi Guys and Girls,
Not really a ProTools specific question, but it'll end up in Tools, so here goes.... We're just starting on a project, and the location recordist had his DIVA disks formated at FAT16. This format apparently wont run on PC's later than windows 3.11 (and some windows 95) and won't run on mac's at all! Any ideas how we can get this 'historical' format media into the modern age? The irony is it's recorded 24 bit polyfiles, but we can't get at them! Thanks, Mat

You need a tool called DiskDriveTuneup from here http://www.softarch.com/
to read the DevaII DVD-RAMs. The newer Devas (IV and V) write FAT32 or UDF. Unfortunately Windows doesn´t suport it´s own older file-formats. OSX only reads FAT32 and UDF DVD-RAMs. What system are you on mac or pc. You need a DVD-RAM capable drive but I guess you´re aware of that. Not all Macs come with DVD-RAM compatible drives. Also some deva-users deliver DVD-RAMs in cartriges but you can remove the disk from them to use them in a regular non-cartridge DVD-RAM drive. Also plan some time for the transfer DVD-RAM is EXTREMELY slow. frank.

Hi Frank,
That's great - many thanks! I'm running both mac and PC, but mostly mac. I haven't actually got my hands on the disks yet - the cutting room are trying to sort it out - the first editior copied them all, but then half of them got deleted, and he's left the country! He must have done something like that, but he's un-contactable. Thanks for the warnings about time - we're up against it on this, so that's good to know. The client needs to know that whomsoever it was that deleted the media first time round has caused us a BIG problem... I'll actually GET a disk on Monday, and I'll give that software a go - and I'll let everyone (who's interested!) know how it works out. Mat

The disks will mount on a Mac, you just need a dvd-ram drive. If you don't have one internally on your computer, you can rent a firewire dvd-ram drive from Coffey Sound in L.A. I have done this many times.

Hi Guys,
Blue Demon, you are spot on. Newer macs with Superdrives will read DVD-RAMs (older macs, and those with ordinary DVD drives can't). Thanks guys... Mat
