Mbox 2 Audio Artifacts/ Crackles/ White Noise

Hello everyone
I've had a Digidesign M-Box 2 Mini for over 3 years now.

Had no problems until recently.
After a clean instillation of Windows 7 on a laptop my girlfriend gave to me
the M-Box 2 has started malfunctioning

Plug it in it works fine for around 5-10 minutes

then inserting a instrument into the Line in slots causes the hardware to either start crackling through the left ear of my headphones. (I've tried more then one pair) Or down sampling the audio until it's sounding bit-crushed.

This can happen when using the Hardware as the main sound card as well during playback

So I tried multiple different USB leads. A different laptop (still windows 7)
Two different drivers, the stand alone and pro-tools package. Altho the problem wasn't half as bad on my friends other laptop it still persisted in a small way.

I've seen many articles and forum threads about this very same problem and can't find a solution?
IS there any fixes you can recommend? OR is it possible to have the hardware repaired for a small price? Or is it time to chuck the thing in the bin.

I'm currently unemployed so buying a new I/O is a no go for a while :/

I'm not sure that it's hardware related, but since it's out of warranty you would have to pay for it to be diagnose at one of Avid's repair shop.
