Bit Resolution vs CPU usage
Greetings PT Nation
My simple question is whether the bit depth, 16 or 24 bit, has an effect on my CPU usage? In other words, can I minimise my CPU usage by recording at 16 bit as opposed to 24 bit? A related question is whether plugins use less CPU when inserted into a 16 bit session as opposed to a 24 bit session? Thank you |

Re: Bit Resolution vs CPU usage
Don't know the definitive answer to this but it kind of makes sense that your CPU will be doing more work when recording in 24 bit as it will be processing and saving more data to the disk than with 16.
I guess it also makes sense to presume your plugins will be doing the same, and hence more CPU usage. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! |

Re: Bit Resolution vs CPU usage
Yes - using 24bit will tax your CPU more than 16bit recording or playback. It will also make much bigger files sizes, so you'll use more hard drive space. It will also sound WAY BETTER than 16 bit. Record a song in both quality setting resolutions and listen to the results - you'll never use 16 bit again. JazzyJ
