Default +6 or +12db fader gain

Hi people, Writing to see on some opinions about the extra 6db of gain on our protools tracks. Is it a path for problems of making too hot of a mix and cause problems for the Mastering Engineer. I personally stay away from it for that reason, But would like to hear some other opinions. Thanks Oscar

You have the right idea. In my opinion, when mixing music, if you need to push a track greater then +6dB, there is a problem somewhere else in the mix....usually something needs to be lowered or eq'd differently in order to make the sound your focusing on cut through. Making things louder only leads to problems. This takes into account the tracks you're mixing have a decent level.

I find the +12dB feature is really hand in post mixing...namely with dialog. Usually field dialog comes in recorded at extremely low levels and I had to usually Audio Sweet gain, or use the +6db on the fader and also the gain on the Trim plugin before we had +12db. The +12db makes things a bit quicker in situations like this.

Why would this even be an option?

When I "save copy in", there is an option for +6 or +12

That is for backwards compatibility.

Wouldn’t be very good if you raised the fader higher than 6dB and then tried to open the session in an older version of PT that doesn’t have that feature.

Makes sense I guess..so in other words. Don't even worry about +6 or +12, it's not used anymore unless going back to older versions of Pro Tools?

I don’t recall when the change was made, but it was a long time ago. Like… maybe v7…

The likelihood of sharing a session with anyone on a system that old would be VERY slim.
