Default Orange peak meters

I just moved to 2020.3 from 12.8.3. Either my previous preferences were different and I that's why I didn't see them, or the orange peak meters are a new feature. (And I use Waves CLA-76 a lot and that never had a meter light on the insert.)

I've read through the metering section of the reference manual, searched the posts here, and Googled, but I'm unclear as to what I'm actually looking at. I think what throws me is that it comes from the top. Is the lower part (how far down it goes) where it's peaking?

For the record, I use Pro Tools Classic metering, Track and Master Meter Types Linked. Peak Hold is set for 3 seconds and Clip Indication is set for infinite.

I apologize if this is regarded as an an inane question.

Google Photos wouldn't let me upload the mix window screenshot (?), but here's the edit window:

I looked into this further and what I was referring are actually the gain reduction meters.

I figured as much.
Your pic link doesn’t work.

You can configure those gain reduction meters in preferences.

Orange peaks mean it would peak/clip if it were sent to the 24 bit world, but it's not actually because the PT mixer is 32bit float. A red peak means the audio is assigned to a 24 bit output and therefore IS peaking/clipping.

Default Re: Orange peak meters

Avid changed peak over 0 dBFS meters a while ago from red to orange for all track types except the Master Fader, which still shows red. When in record mode, it will still show red for clip indication. The reasoning is as long as you're within the mix engine, which has virtually unlimited headroom, you're not actually clipping within the mix engine. However, at the Master Fader, it is actually indicating clipping in red because it is leaving the mix engine and on its way to your speakers where you'll actually hear it.

Thanks.

I'm trying to decide which setting is more useful: seeing how much a comp is reducing the gain or going with the sum.
