Saw this article. Chris Muth has an article refuting just this. As for sound - I can definitely hear the difference in my 24 track+ mixes in the box vs. my dangerous 2-bus. The Dangerous sounds wider, taller, deeper, punchier. Hey, look in the other forums, there are posts requesting a list of major projects mixed entirely within pro tools. There aren't many.

There was a very interesting thread here that went on for 10 pages. It is locked because it got so far off topic etc. I haven't read the article refered to here.
