Default Is Anyone NOT having session corruption with 7.3?

I know there are many people who are losing time, reputation and business because of 7.3 corruption issues. I have not been so unlucky (yet).

But before I get bit (or anyone else for that matter), I'd like to find out if anyone is NOT having these issues. I running 30-50 session hours a week here. So I am leary of pressing 7.3 into full time service. It is audio and Midi only. Full band tracking stuff. Usually 12-40 tracks. Not a ton of edits (not 5000 fades mind you, but a fair share).

So if there are folks who are using 7.3cs1 on a daily basis in a tracking environment and are session file corruption free, please share your experience.

For the record, I track to both internal and FW 400 external drives.

Default Re: Is Anyone NOT having session corruption with 7

This post will probably be the kiss of death for me, BUT...

I am doing well with 7.3

I've done about 30 hard session hours in the last 10 days or so - primarily vocal ODs and single instrumentalists (never tracking more than 3 or 4 tracks at once) but printing plenty of midi. track counts in the 20-30 tracks, 60-80 voice range. All session 24/44.1 - not really working the machine incredibly hard, but kicking long delays in for rough mixes and using a card and a half of dsp without doing much... 8-10 virt insts on average -- sometimes more...

A few things that I am doing that others may not:

1. My sample library is on an external FW800 raid.
2. My audio drive (sata) was recently wiped and disk warrior gave it a clean bill of health;
3. I backup to a server every hour. That is, my server backs up anything I create hourly. At most, I lose an hour of work.
4. Plugins... for this upgrade, I stripped the plugins folder, and I have been adding plugs as needed... I went a week without using waves. But I am not having any problems. I think part of this is I re-installed the latest and greatest versions of EVERY plug. Including all new waveshells, new kontakt, new ivory, new b4II, new altiverb, new everything... I discussed compatibility with just about every vendor. I don't use MDW. I added the plugs one at a time, and so-far, so good. I have not yet added the Sound Toys bundle or Autotune. I am using the absolute latest waveshells.

I am annoyed by some interface issues and "it's a feature, not a bug" discoveries, but I have not lost any data or performance due to the software.

I know, I'm doomed for saying this in public.

I may not be pushing my rig during tracking as hard as others -- but in mixing, I surely do (at 24/44.1) -- no video, just stereo dithered mixer.

Obviously YMMV... if I had the surround mixer, or working 24/96, or using certain plugs... I am not using a large format control surface -- just a little baby hui and a tranzport.... hui protocol works fine. I am not working to picture right now -- so again, could this be a common factor?

I am working on a G5 2.7 DP w/ 6.5 gigs of ram -- is PPC more stable than intel? I am not using an expansion chassis.

There are SO MANY variables... in a forum that I visit for admins of an ecommerce platform, it is MANDATORY that your hardware specs and software be listed in your signature. Otherwise, it would be impossible to help anyone... and not fair to people who DON'T have a specific config thinking their store is going to fall apart... but the "bug" is only appropriate to those running mySQL 5, etc...

I don;t think we should clog our sigs with hardware and software specs... it would double the bandwidth of the DUC... but I do think that anyone making a bug report should include their specs (all their specs) in the original post. That will make it easier for others with similar rigs to compare... or not.

I also think it's time for Digi (or volunteers if Digi will permit) to start moderating the DUC a little harder. MOVE posts to appropriate forums -- no LE posts in tdm, etc... If someone doesn't post their hardware specs in a "PT 7.3 crashes with a SPOD" - then the post is removed, etc... things are more complicated than ever... and there's NO WAY to filter through this without some order. Right now, it feels like the DUC has lost some of it's signal to the noise -- even though the noise is probably valid, until people post their ENTIRE SPECS, it's hard to judge a problem...

And so, a question, "is PT 7.3cs1 safe to use?" is a valid question -- and the only answer can be, "with this hardware and software, it's working for me..." without qualifying it, the answer is reckless.

I probably could have made the point in half the words, but I'm tired. 'night.

This is probably the end for me as well. I'm running everything fine. Nice sized sessionsm, OMF's, Waves Plugs. I'm running a XP machine, Using only broadcast wave files and using a mix of NTFS and HFS+ HDs. God, I can feel the audio swapping with other audio as I type this. If I have any problems I'll report back.
Peace,
Brandon

Fine here. 180 minutes of FX. 4-5 QT-Tracks with LOTS of edits because of picture-recuts. 120 Tracks of FX, Atmos and Music. almost 10000 fades. No VCAs. Only mono and stereo tracks. No multiple play-lists. All plugs are rendered but a bunch of inactive plugs all over the session.

The only thing I get is that PT randomly locks up when trimming very large region-groups (see posting in the surround-section).

But every morning I hope this corruption-bug is not going to bite me. It would mean a total desaster since we are in the middle of a mix (luckily not mixing in the box). I keep my fingers crossed.

frank.

For what it's worth, I also did a complete, and I mean complete, system overhaul when I installed 7.3. Wiped, 0 level formatted my drives, reinstalled the system from DVD, then downloaded and updated the combo updater. I installed 7.3 straight away. And I installed only the plugs I thought/knew were compatible, one at a time. I too lived without Waves for a week. Kontakt 2 has been great (my most used 3rd party plug). Drumagog too! And my system is faster than it's been in 3 years (it feels responsive, zippy, etc).

[incidentally, a couple plugs that have crashed 7.3 on my box consistently are Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2, the URS demos, the Pultec demo from Digi webstore. But especially Guitar Rig 2. Amplituibe 2 fairs much better. And for what it's worth, I was going to upgrade to NI B4II, but I was not sure if I could import settings and presets from B4I... and I have a ton of sessions over the years that used the B4I. I don't want to have to recreate everything. PLUS, the original B4 has seemed to work fine in 7.3, barely even registers in my CPU meter, and has not glitched out at all.]

Sorry if I didn't post enough of my system specs. I know its a blanket question I asked. But I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing the elephant in the room (ie the people who are having issues only had Intels, only worked with video, or something like that)... and more important to me, if anyone WAS having luck, what was their general workflow. PS I'm not gloating to those having the bugs, I feel for you something fierce. my system was hopelessly trashed the past few months (hence the overhaul).

I haven't been bitten yet thank God. Thanks folks!

Just an update for you folks. We have found a bug that will cause potential session corruption in some cases when working with many regions or with duplicate regions. We hope to have a 7.3.1 updater posted by Monday (or earlier if possible)that deals with this issues.

Thanks for the reports, example sessions, and most of all your patience with this.

Regards,

DigiCS

Hello Digi
I agree to jeremy, but we often have no time to give very detailed infos about our systems.
I know that you need better systen infos to react on the errors we sometimes find.
Why dont you deliver a smart program which scans all protools relvant things (Plugs, version numbers, system etc.) on our computer? This could be done easy.
Then we can paste the text into our messages.
This would help you and us!

Ale
