Default 5.3.1 conflict with Adobe DV edit software

This is not really a TDM question but a post expert could maybe help me out here.
I have just put together a new system running Windows XP (all service packs and updates current)with Audiomedia III installed and 5.3.1.
I am trying to run Adobe Premiere 6.5 and After Effects 5.5.
Neither video program will start with PT program files in place. Both work fine without the PT application installed. Neither seems bothered by the extensions, drivers or hardware present.
Any ideas?
