Audio in synch with quicktime, out of synch in FCP
I just finished a project (finally a final mix to a movie I've done 3 temp mixes for...) And everything is in synch with the quicktime, and when I export my mix to final cut pro, it drifts out of synch. I had them make me a new quicktime, thinking that they changed something in their timeline (they had done numerous framerate changes trying to fix an interlacing problem) But the new quicktime was identical to the last one. I suspect the problem still lies with final cut pro, but what can I do do fix it? Can I do a pulldown and re-export an AIFF?
Any other tips? |

Have you checked that Final Cut has the same sample rate setting as your files? I don't know how Final Cut handles sample rate conversion?

Check framerate
Check to make aure all the frame rate and Sample rate settings are the same.
We recently had a similar problem. 'The dialogue edit was done on a mac usign a quicktime, and was in synch. When it came to mix using the V1, it would drift. Faremrate issue. Someone did a double pull down we suspect. At elast that's what the calculations told us. So, check to make sure that on the picture side, the framerate was set right. Remember, alot of video guys think that 24 and 23.97 are the same. Just as they think that 30 and 29.97 are the same. |

Re: Audio in synch with quicktime, out of synch in FCP
Have you verified that the frame rate in FCP and in Pro Tools match?
If they don't, that could easily explain the drift. |

Re: Audio in synch with quicktime, out of synch in FCP
What version of FCP are they using? I had major sync problems and drift with FCP projects below 4.5.
Did you get an OMF from them and then sync to the QT? What do you mean numerous frame-rate changes. Why? Also how are they exporting the QT with you. At what frame rate was the video shot. At what frame rate was it edited. Sounds like a stupid question but I once worked on a project that was supposedly shot on film at 24 fps then telecine-ed to 25. It just wouldn't sync. Then it turned out the guy actually shot it at 25. Edited on the AVId at 24 and then had it sent to telecine. Check it out. Mitch

Re: Audio in synch with quicktime, out of synch in FCP
I've had this problem over a year ago. It had to do with some metadata being embedded in the mixdown files that were being misinterpreted by FCP. Apparently, this has been fixed by Apple a long while ago. If this is the issue, there must be some older version of FCP and/or PT being used here.
The easy fix was to open the AIF files in QuickTime Pro and export them to the same settings. This dumps the metadata and makes life wonderful again. |
