Default Apple monitor blues? Snap, Snap, etc.

Anyone experience a high voltage discharge (like static)...snap ...screen goes black...then resizes.

Used to happen once a month, then lately, sometimes 3-4 times a minute.

I switched this old 17" (blue & white) to 85 Hz & blew out the dust with a compressor/

No help. It's intermittant. But snapping like crazy, or resizing. Oops...I thinks it's gone.

Anyone experience anything like this?

I did......early on. Has not happened to me for quite a while. What climate do you live in? Lots of static buildup in the winter months?
Monitor is going on 3 years old.

Now it stopped. Doesn't that just beat all odds?

It sounds like the automatic de-gausser (sp?) kicked in. I used to work at Apple and all of the trinitrons had it built in - it would run whenever needed or when you pushed that big "Don't Push Me" button on the back...

Well shaggy...
Do you have an apple display?
If you do, your monitor may be heading to a dreadful end.
The same thing happened to me about a year ago.
I was using a 17" Apple Studio Display. I bought it to go along w/ my G4 350.
A little over a year later the symptoms that you have described started happening to me.
After about a week of diminishing performance
the monitor died.
I later found out that that particular model was kind of a lemon (lucky me).
If you want to learn more try www.macfixit.com
their forums are very helpful.
good luck.

hey, shag!

Same thing happened to me with my 17".
Snap, snap .... which got worse and worse and then it went bye, bye. Pissed me off, because it happened after just a month or so after the warranty expired. What your monitor is doing now is absolutely exactly what happened with mine. Sorry for the prognosis. I picked up the NEC accusync 19" from Outpost.com
several months ago, and works great. I think i got it for $279, but probably even cheaper now.

good luck.

I think you guys are right. It's saiyanara Apple Display.

Bummer.

What to get? Black NECs are under 150. Three year warranty? I'd like to get a pair...and a decent video card.

...things are getting real dark here...can't get to control strip or upper menu functions.

Oh well.

(FWIW- I did de-qauss this baby with OSD commands. The snapping sounds is at the upper left rear)

Anymore suggestion?

That could be your high voltage power supply, called the flyback power supply. My apple 17" studio display monitor had to go back to the factory for repair after it starting snapping and blooming (get's real bright then goes black and resets).
Sounds like a it's cheaper to buy a new one than have apple repair it if it's out of warranty.

I had same problem a few month ago.
I found out that the cooling fun of power supply of G4 was not working!!!!!
Means temperature inside of power supply was really high. (Then monitor starts reacting like you discribe.
)
I ordered the parts at Mac dealer to replace but still no phone call from them.
(I guess they forced me to get new G4800...)

I strongly recommend you to get a good power surger in order to provide stable power.
I have learned how important it was with spending a lot of money.

I am sure it is not the issue of OS,conflict or mac itself.
Power supply must be the guy.

Interesting?

I tried the ol standby 15" Sony, and there was a serious color distortion I had never noticed before.

Thought it was just old.

We're talking Apple CRT display right?

Power supply inside tower?

OSD no longer works. Distortion along the vertical.

Same Same?
