Default A/D Converters

I m looking to really upgrade the sound of my 002r with a good converter. I have heard that this is a good step. What does everyone recommend? Apogee Rosetta, etc? Does it really make a difference to the sound to get a converter? Still learning thanks.

I've had my Rosetta for almost 4 years now. I use it with an 001 and it's just great. I use it about 12 hours a day and it hasn't ever been anything other than reliable and well-worth the money. I'm sure they've come down in price now cause they're getting kinda old.

The sound I get using it and my Brent Averill 1272s, into the Rosetta, then lightpiped into my computer can't be beat.
Lastly I use a Benchmark D/A converter and Mackie HR 624 monitors. I use it and love it.

You should also look into the RME ad/da ADI-2. I just got it and it made the world of difference and it's absolutely sounds amazing.

By the way, I'd stack it up next to a Rosetta anyday and only a third of the price.

I seem to like what outside a>d has to offer. i agree that alot of the converters out there will improve your sound.

i also wanted to pose a question...

can't you use the rosetta to do the d>a as well as the a>d? I'm just curious about the benefits of having a separate d>a converter.

can you also do this on the rme?

The product known as the "Apogee Rosetta" was a two channel A/D converter.

The Rosetta 200 is two A/D and two D/A, the Rosetta 800 is eight A/D and eight D/A.

I've been using a Rosetta 800 for a year now and it's good. I worked with a Benchmark D/A for a while and find that it's nicer than the D/A on the Rosetta 800, though.

so what does the audio chain look like with a rosetta?

assume you are doing vocals or an acoustic.
Gear:
Mic
Mic-pre (analog, i.e. Avalon 737 UA 6176)
Rosetta 200
DIGI002r

What order is it. Do you use all analong I/O's? do you use any optical I/O's?

I go preamp - to Rosetta, then optically into the computer card.
To hear just how good the sound is, you also need a great D/A converter and good monitors. The whole chain is necessry and all equally important, starting with the mic, and instruments.

2 things

1- you bypass the DIGI002r altogether? How does PTLE recognize it?
2-can you not use the rosetta 200 for the D/A, can't it do both A/D & D/A, or do you need two separate ones?

Oh my yes. My mixes sounded ugly after adding nice D/A, because I couldn't really hear what was going on. Now my mixes translate much better, and I definitely get a more accurate picture all accross the spectrum. Mids are more obvious, highs are clear to the point of exposing shrillness, bass is more accurate. Though it's hard to justify the cost, it's even harder to return the Rosetta 800, now that I'm used to it.

I don't know if I'd go 8-channels again, maybe just two. I really like alot of the sounds I got with the A/D in my octopre, even after hearing them through quality D/A.
