Default Anyone running 2021 on old cheesegraters?

With all of the speculation around the next PT update, I remembered that I haven't updated to 2021.3. I am still running a 2009 Mac Pro (4,1) flashed to a 5,1 with upgraded CPUs, but the machine isn't on the supported list any longer. I might have thrown caution to the winds, if PT 2021 didn't require a firmware update to my HD | Native card.

So, anyone with a similar machine and HD|Native made the plunge yet? Any problems beyond the bugs-for-all issues that are mentioned frequently here?

Hi,

we are running two 12core Cheesegraters on PT2021.3 (on Mojave). Beside the known quirks, they are doing fine.

Cheers
Maik

Hi Maik Marsian

But do you use HDNative Card?
Support told me that after updating the firmware I still could use older PT versions. I fear that i kill something with the required firmware upgrade.
I am always in the “middle“ of a project and do not have to much time for trouble ;-)

Thanks Maik!

Ale, if you look at Maik's sig file, it says HDN, so I expect that does mean HD|Native.

With a metal GPU, the 5,1 is officially supported by Apple for Mojave.

I am personally running 11.6 with OpenCore with a metal GPU and a newer WIFI/Bluetooth card using Open Core.

No problems here with unsupported systems

1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 12 Core on High Sierra Nvidia GT630
1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 6 Core on High Sierra Nvidia GT630
1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 12 Core on Mojave Nvidia GT630

The High Sierra Systems run better than Mojave
I am waiting for new Prozessor M2? Macs with more Ram and Monitor Options.

Obsidian, your posts have certainly helped me over the years!

The MSI Gaming RX 560 4GB card is running well for me on OS 10.14.6, and Pro Tools Ultimate 2021.7 with my HDx 12-core 5,1 Cheesegrater Mac Pro.

I picked it up on eBay for $100 shipped on a Buy it Now.

The MSI is nice because it doesn't need an additional power connector!

You'll also see the 2GB model and the bigger MSI RX580 (which I *believe* needs TWO power connectors - Some RX580s need 1 8-pin power and others need 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin, depending on watts).

Also, read the Mac Pro video card thread, because the XFX Radeon cards do not work in the cMP. I also think the ASUS and Gigabyte are not compatible.

Here is the cMP GPU thread to double check.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...r-cmp.2174600/

Currently on eBay, I see one for 159 plus 20 shipping from a 100% seller, FWIW and another ending in 18 hours, currently at 95.

I dig that Mojave can still run the 32 bit code. Catalina is a bridge too far for my needs on the old cMP. YMMV Good Luck! :)

PS: Open Core seems cool, but I'm just on Vanilla 10.14.6 with the Metal GPU for my HDx rig.

PS2: Can run 2 big monitors + a TV. My card specs are below, they also have a LP Low Profile model, FWIW

I have the same machine but running HDX. I have a bad feeling that the upcoming Hybrid engine would kill these old (2009-2012 MacPro) machines.
I’m hoping that they will still run with the hybrid engine turned off.
I am also running an Avid Carbon on my 2019 MBP and loving this new Hybrid workflow so maybe it’s just time to retire these 12 year old machines
