I'm not sure why there is the inconsistency with fan noise and the new HD interfaces, but I'm sure it is real. My HD IO sounds like a jet taking off when I first turn it on but after about 3 seconds the fan slows down and it is really quiet. Almost sounds like some units have different fan controller firmware or the temperature sensors are in different locations. I don't know.

Hope this helps,
Greg

totally helpful. thanks

It seems to me that all that the new firmware did was allow higher temps before the fan comes on. I'm looking to reduce the noise after it comes on. And to extend the life of internal components, having the fan stay ramped up would be an advantage, as long as it is unheard.

Right but if one keeps their control room at 69 degrees - with plenty of airflow thru racks of gear -

then should be golden

Reviving this corpse with a picture of the inside of the HD I/O I found over at GS.
I ordered the fan, and once I gathered some courage, I'll give it a go and record the procedure.

I caved in after about 10 minutes of listening to my brand new 16 analog and 16 digital hiss away in the control room, where 99 percent of folks keep them (I guess). I ordered some 15 dB fans instead of the 29 dB ones in the box and replaced them myself. There was NO WAY I could live with the fan noise from the stock interfaces and I think it is a bad joke that they would cheap out on the fans like that. The ones I got are like 6-7 usd each. Retail. The interfaces are over 500 times more expensive...

The improvement was huge, but they are not absolutely silent like my apogees were (sob). Still, now I can hear any potential noise in my recordings again.

Thanks for sharing!
Could you specify which fan you are using as replacement?

I'm looking at this one:
