Default Please quick help with midi

I almost never track midi into PT but now I need to do it and there is a strange error, when I play the keyboard I see no midi input or hear the instrument. Once I engage recording I can see midi notes appearing but still no sound out of the VI. When I end the recording and push play the recorded midi notes will play.

This happens no matter if I create an instrument track or midi track + aux input with an instrument.

I'm sure this is something stupidly simple but I cannot figure it out

Check Preferences> MIDI > Default Thru Instrument > Selected

...or something similar

Thanks, there was nothing selected and I tried all the options offered there (VI, Keyboard in and Follow Selected MIDI track) but still, no workie

Arming a track and pushing keys results no indication or audible audio on midi or instrument track, while after recording notes are there and will play, so right now we can't hear anything while playing... heeeelp
