Default Surround mixer taking up three chips in a stereo session!!

I started a session mixing in surround, but I then switched to stereo (I need to burn a CD for a musician who doesn't have a surround system). I switched all my track outputs from surround to stereo. Yet I still have three chips used by the surround mixer!!

What exactly determines when the surround mixer is on, and how many chips it uses?

Thanks,
Mike

Rich,
(1) Is that the only way? I would sure prefer to leave the I/O setup alone, so it fits all needs and I don't have to ever worry about it. But if I must, I must.
(2) Do you understand why 3 chips are tied up, rather than say 1?

Thanks for the help!
MIke

It is probably due to using subpaths to the surround output for your stereo outs. This will still use the surround mixer. You can go to I/O setup and make a new stereo path and temporarily disable the surround path for the stereo mix if you need the extra processing. Do a Save As to keep the surround mix.

to clarify, what i've learned with huge amounts of trial and error is that ANY output/input/send that is a part of a surround path uses the surround mixer. so when you bus all your dialog to CENTER lets say (mono path) it all uses up a ton of surround mixer dsp because that mono path is a subpath of a surround path.

you can make a stereo aux input, and route all your tracks through a plain old stereo bus and then route that bus to the LR which is a subpath of your surround outputs. OR you could disable the surround outputs and enable some stereo ones.

hope that helps and that it saves you all the time it took me to get this straightened out.
