In the meantime, I have to decide what to do about the fan noise. I've got an updated (beta) firmware version which has slowed the fan down, but it's still too noisy and the back of the Carbon is now really hot...overall I'm not getting a good vibe, which is a shame because it sounds fantastic.
Hi Dominic,

It's definitely surprising you're still experiencing fan noise after the firmware update. What type and number of cables are currently connected to the unit? Is the room temperature hot by chance?

Kyle,

It doesn't make any difference what's connected - I've tried it with just the power cable and it behaves the same way.
When it is connected to things, I'm using:
240v power cable,
Cat5e to the computer (Mac Pro 7.1),
Two TRS to XLR cables from the main monitor outputs to a power amp.
No line ins, no mic pre ins, no headphones, no DI/instrument inputs.
All inputs are set to line in / bypass mode.
Ambient temperature is 20-21C (68-70F).

Mark Corbin has told me that the heat is not something to worry about and the new fan profile has been extensively tested, so that reduces my concern there.
It does sound like other people are using a rack, whereas I have this sitting on the desk next to me, propped up on some 1/2" high neoprene feet.
Perhaps if I get a 2U rack bag or desktop rack with sides the noise will be less apparent. I might try that next.

Dominic

You might want to get a db app for your phone and see what reading you get.

Thanks, Dominic. I'll review this with the team.

I've got an SPL meter but it doesn't really reveal much about the problem - it reads 38.4dB at about 8 inches from the side of the box, regardless of which speed the fan is running at. That's A-weighted and doesn't really tell you much about the annoying frequencies!
I realise that 38.4dB is pretty quiet by any normal standards, but it doesn't reflect the relief I feel when I turn the Carbon off, and that can't be a good thing.

Well, Avid have fixed my licensing problem - the full suite mentioned in my first post appeared in my account today and they are all installed (along with all the various licensing and download managers). No word from Avid themselves - the case is still open and not updated, so I have no idea if they fixed the problem manually or it was fixed by some kind of internal refresh.
Anyway, you get the licenses even if you extend your support on an existing PT perpetual license. Or at least, I did

Download is

http://downloads.mcdsp.com/v6/HD/Mac..._6_7_1_OSX.zip

(I had to copy the link and paste it into a new window for some reason).

But if you've managed to install it already, then you just have to go to your iLok manager to activate the code (which is on your Avid products page)......

instruction is...."To redeem, open your iLok License Manager, select Licenses from the menu, then select Redeem Activation Code"
