Default Vox Recording Crashes & Post-Production Sound Quality

I am using Protools 9 with Windows 7. I have all the instruments recorded in wav tracks imported from a Korg, and am using the Protools for the sole purpose of adding vocal tracks, and converting to mp3 in order to upload to YouTube.

I am having two major problems that I cannot seem to get to the bottom of. The first one is that when I am in the process of recording the vocals, as soon as I turn the recording volume up loud enough to pick up my vocals adequately, Protools crashes. I get the message "can't get to the drive fast enough" and the track I am recording in is greyed out. Have to restart all over again. I have calculated that I spend much more time rebooting and trying to adjust the sound then I do recording vocals and naturally it is not optimal to concentrate on vocal recording.

Problem two is that after I finally get the vocal tracks laid down successfully, the final sound quality is fair to lousy. You can hear it for yourself on my Youtube channel in my profile if you want to know what I mean. However: the sound I get on the earphones while in process of recording of both the instrument tracks and vocals is crystal and high quality.

I am not using any plugins, just recording vocals in new tracks straight ahead with a little reverb. Thanks for your help.

Follow Craig's advice, it's important to know what computer components you're using so Post a Sandra Report.

First thing to ask though is; Are you recording to a separate drive?

Thank you but I need to establish whether or not I am making basic errors in my input level first while recording.

I am not bouncing to a separate drive. If I do, would that be a CD, or a mass storage I'd want to bounce to? Since PT is in the CD-Rom drive not sure about that one.

I'm looking for guidance from a user who has some experience recording their own vocals and who understands my instinct to turn up the mic input and get an "intimate performance" - someone who might be able to tell me if that instinct is wrong. I suspect it may be a typical mistake that inexperienced performers make recording their own vocals and that maybe I should be turning the input on the mic down. That would not only prevent crashes but also probably create less noise. What I really want to know is whether I can trust that a lower level of input is really sufficient to capture the vocals properly without losing that human touch. Possibly, I am letting through roo much noise that isn't manifesting itself until processing to mp3. Maybe someone can tell me this, how high should the wave form be of properly recorded vocals? Less than halfway? All the way to the top? That would help a lot right there. I'd like to establish whether I am going wrong here first, as I suspect, before pursuing other issues and I have read up on some of those, like cables, etc. Thanks.

Adjusting volume is not what is causing the crash. Its very likely that your system(computer) has hardware issues. This is why we need the Sandra report. Recording to the system drive(drive C:) or a partition of it is KNOWN to cause problems. Since you missed that requirement, its reasonable to expect you missed others as well, or maybe you missed required system tweaks(most are actually....required, not optional). Please post a Sandra

And to answer the question about PT being in the CD-Rom - yes it is in there, because it won't run unless the disc is in the drive, the hardware is in one port and the Ilok in another port. It's PT9, that's why. There is not physically any way to bounce to anything else (other than internal) besides a mass storage device. Could that really make a big difference? Another thing is that when I'm in process of recording I am saving data to an internal folder - should I save the PT data to an external drive while I am working? Cumbersome, but whatever works at this point.

Default Re: Vox Recording Crashes & Post-Production Sound Quality

I appreciate the replies. However I was hoping for some practical advice of some measure that I sure take to address this problem.

I had PT 8 before and I had the same issues with it being difficult for PT to run without crashing when the vocal recording volume was at a level where I felt most comfortable singing. The problem with PT 8 however was that it gave me the "Blue Screen of Death" and eventually my computer crashed and it was unrecoverable - also a Toshiba laptop. I had to buy another laptop. I was assured that with my new laptop and system that PT 9 would be an appropriate fit.

What should I try to do in particular to address the problem?

I had also asked about a recorded vocal track - should the waveform be halfway to the top, 75%, 100%? An answer to that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you.

a few questions I'm seeing:
1) 3GB of RAM, 1 1GB stick and 1 2GB stick?
2) where is the audio binge recorded to, all I'm seeing is a 5400RPM system drive w/ backup partition?

The size of the waveform is a non-issue. Since that is easily changed, it does not represent the volume level. And having to have the PT CD in the drive for Pro Tools to run is something that should not be necessary.

Cheers,
