Default 2020.12.1 and Windows compatibility

I'm on Windows 10 version 2004, which on the Avid compatibility page is shown as the newest OS that Avid says is compatible with PT 2020.12.

I need to update Windows (support for v 2004 is ending in December).

Are there known issues with PT 2020.12 and Windows 10 21H1?

I'd imagine there must be some users still on PT 2020.12 who have newer versions of Windows.

I'd really like to avoid reinstalling a newer version of PT for a while.

Image or clone your OS drive. Install the latest W10 update. Things don't work, restore image or clone. Personally, I use Macrium Reflect. There is a free version.

I use Pro Tools 2020.5 on always-up-to-date Windows 10. No issues. Windows 10 build versions (which are little more than security updates, really) do not seem to break Pro Tools functionality.

Thanks, The Weed. I use Acronis; my OS and PT drives back up every day, redundantly. Earlier this year a Windows update from build 1909 tanked everything (not just PT). Acronis saved me in that case.

Thanks, EGS. That's what I suspected, but I get very skittish when Windows starts nagging me to update and I always push it out if I can.

If you have Windows 10 Pro, use Group Policy to block any and all updates. I've done this and some security updates are downloaded, but I must manually approve installation. Any other updates are shown, but not downloaded. I have to initiate download and install manually.

Thanks, The Weed. Yes, I have Windows 10 Pro This is a great idea. Generally, all I want are security updates and I'd definitely prefer to pick and choose everything else.

I always dread doing a full Windows install because of all the crap I need to get rid of as well as all of the customizations I have to do (mostly to make it look and behave like Windows 7).

Updating Windows 10 does not involve a full install, it just updates and leaves everything in place. The only things I check after any W10 update is Sound to be sure my interface isn't selected and Universal Serial Bus Controllers to be sure none have reverted to the Power saving default.

I use Trasher to Backup my Preferences, delete Preferences and Databases and Restore Preferences after a Reboot after any W10 update.

BTW, I've used Group Policy to disable System Restore (and deleted any Restore Points) because I'm imaging nightly.

I'm aware of that; I was just referring to those times when a full install is required.

Useful tip--thanks.

I actually have a shortcut in Quick Launch to a .png file that shows one of your posts with Trasher instructions. I use Trasher regularly.
