2009 Mac Pro (upgraded CPU) or 2014 MBP i7 for PT12HD.
Running PT12.7.1HD w/ HD-Native PCIe.
I've been using a 2009 Mac Pro w/ an upgraded CPU 3.46GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 32GB RAM, ATI 5770 Graphics Card running 1080p out to a 60" Samsung. All SSD's... system, samples, audio drives. Wondering if I'd get any better performance on my Mid-2014 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM w/ SSD. I'd get a TBolt HD-Native box and run my other SSD's via external USB3 cases. Main issue is the CPU spike issue w/ even small sessions or with many VI's (Spire, BreakTweaker, etc). I know the CPU spike issue affects many users on different machines, but generally speaking does this seem like a move forward w/ a newer Mac w/ i7 over older architecture? Or possibly a reduction in performance due to less Ram, less cores? Many thanks for any insights offered.

Based on my reading, I'd stay with what you have and hope for a build of PT that solves the cpu spikes(because those seem to happen on a lot of systems). Troubleshooting can be a PITA, so I would image or clone your current system drive, and then experiment a bit(maybe different versions of OSX, remove some 3rd party plugins, make sure all plugins are up to date, etc). Just my 2 cents

Yeah... it's the waiting for a solid PT build that troubles me. Who really knows when.
That aside, do u think my current MP rig has better performance specs for PT12 than the MBP?

Well, seems my answer has been address in another thread.
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=390226 And... my take away is to stay with my MP and not mess with switching to the MBP.

Re: 2009 Mac Pro (upgraded CPU) or 2014 MBP i7 for PT12HD.
The CPU/Performance problems seem to stem from Pro-Tools, regardless of the Computer or OS, generally speaking.
Until Avid fixes this at the code level, throwing money into different/new computers is a waste, IMO.
