Default Tandberg Model 4 to PC connection?

Hi,

I have a Tandberg model 4 tape recorder and some old (from the 1950s) audio tapes I want to transfer to my PC.

I can se there are some connectors on the back of the unit, but I think they are old rca type connectors. Is it possible to connect it to my Avid Omni interface somehow. Maby with some kind of rca ot jack/xlr adapter ?

The pics are quite small but the connections don't look like RCA to me. Might they be quarter inch? In any case, a stereo direct box should work, once you figure out what those connections are(with the proper adapter cables). Its also possible that cables terminated in quarter inch might work fine plugged directly into the front pair of inputs. Looking again(and zooming in), it appears that those outputs MIGHT be speaker outputs, so a direct box that can handle a speaker-level input might be needed. Hopefully, someone else will see this and know what kind of connections you really have.

They could well be RCA's. RCA's started showing up in the 30s. They look like they could be - I would try plugging an RCA in and see if it worked. If so, you would have to make custom wires for the occasion. Google wiring RCA to XLR for more info. It's possible someone makes these wires too.

This site looks like they have the manual for this machine:

...but you have to create an account and log in to download it.

Chris,
If these tapes have been sitting unplayed for decades, you know that you should have them "baked" before attempting to run them through the transport, right? Search the internets for local vendors and the wisdoms of this. You do not want to be the guy who learns about "Tape Shed" the hard way.

Apologies if this is way under your pay grade. I learned the hard way in the 70s....
