Quick question: Time Limit?

Though I've never reached the length, what is, or is there even a time limit for a PT session?

It's probably 23:59:59.99 (H:M:S) which is MIDI Time Code max, I believe..

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Which one of you is right though?? In a few weeks I'm starting my live recording gig. It's a two-day event and will probably cover 12-14 hours total. Can anyone confirm the time limit? Thanks.

Split it into 2 sessions so you don't exceed the 12 hour limitation. You can set the session start time in the Session Setup Window in the second session to start at 11:00:00:00

Thanks Rail. I don't know about starting the second session at that time, I'm not sure why you'd want to do that.

However, the concerts are split over 2 days, so I can easily create sessions for day 1 and day 2. Thanks for the help guys.

Only thing you need to watch out for is the 2 gig file size limit if you're planning to stay in constant record.

The reason for having a cross-over SMPTE time is if you wanted to lock it to video later and not have the SMPTE numbers repeat.

Thanks for the tip about syncing it to video. That's in the cards for future productions.

I never knew about the 2 gig size limit. So that's per mono track, right? Say I have 8 tracks recording, they can each record for up to 2 gigs. At 24 bit 48 kHz, how long would that be? I planned on splitting the 'tape' between performances between each group - maybe just for a short moment. This would stop the file and create a new one once recording resumed, correct? Then I think I have the size limitation figured out and it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm recording to an external Glyph hard drive, the new GT series 050, 120 gigs. And if that isn't enough, I've got 2 80 gig drives installed into my G4. Does everything look good to go?

48,000 samples per second.. 3 bytes per sample for a 24 bit mono track... about 4 hours worth of recording at 48kHz per track. If you have another rig you should run it in tandem.. or run a MDM as a backup and tie the word clocks together. At 48kHz, you'll use about 8 Megabytes per minute. Stopping and restarting will create a new sound file, correct. Make sure your Open Ended Record Allocation preference isn't too small.. and run your system before the actual event to simulate the long record time.
