Kernel Panic Maddness!
Hey guys, I just bought a refurbished Mac Pro trash can (the 6 core model) and I'm getting a kernel panic while using pro tools. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling and today I did a clean reinstall of the entire OS and then reinstalled pro tools along with my UAD plugins/software (I'm using an Apollo 16 and an Apollo Twin daisy chained as my interface) the Slate Everything Bundle and the UBK subscription bundle just to see if there was some obscure, outdated plugin that might be the issue, but it still does the exact same thing.
Do any of you software geniuses want to see if you can figure out what the issue is? Thanks in advance! Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
(did you try downloading a fresh Pro Tools installer, if not do that now and do that Pro Tools reinstall).
Move *all* plugin files out of the Pro Tools plugin folder, put them in "unused" or anywhere else for now. Shut down the Mac Disconnect every periperal you can including the UAD interface and all other thunderbolt devices and cables. Leave one monitor connected, keyboard and mouse connected. Power On Start Pro Tools, while holding down 'N' and select BuiltIn Output as the playback engine. If that all works OK then contact UAD for help and/or return the Mac Pro to where you got it. |

all i can say is ... how does your system run with ONLY avid running .. NO 3rd party anything ???
if this runs fine then you can start eliminating things one at a time .. cheers john

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
I'm really sorry but my first impression from that report is the cpu has issues . physical issues. perhaps run apple service diagnostic or take it back to the place you bought it from to check.
You could quickly reinstall like suggested on a basic install of tools and see if it panics.. it likely will do so if it definitely is a cpu issue but may sneak through and disguise a hidden issue unless you make sure you put it under load - i.e.; load a 256 track session and keep filling a row with plugins (channel strip) until the cpu is fully loaded... see if it works and doesn't give a panic under 90% peak load... it should hold and be rock solid on a fresh os/tools install... good luck

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
Does look like a CPU problem. I had two kernel panic problems on my mac over the last year. Since you just bought the mac, I would call apple asap as it is covered for 1 year. They can help you sort this.

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
We have the very same problem with one of our Mac Pros. Tomorrow will be the last test and then it goes back to a certified Apple service for check out. I've heard that they had some issues with video cards and thunderbolt connections on the motherboard.
Usually it goes through all the tests fine, the problem only comes when you try to use real software. My uneducated guess is that while test software check components one by one, if you use Pro Tools for example, you put burden on all the things from cpu through ram to graphics, etc.

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
I had a similar problem on our 6-core trash cans. Turned out to be a defective video card D500, and was covered under and Apple program that wasn't quite advertised. You have to look for it, but it's there. I took it to the Apple store Genius bar reservation. They connected to their internal network, ran diagnostics and verified. Quite painless. Fixed in 5 days.

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
Thank you guys so much for your help on this. It definitely sounds like a hardware issue. Luckily I've still got apple care so it should be a relatively painless process to get it fix. Seriously can't thank all you guys enough for being willing to help diagnose the issue!

Re: Kernel Panic Maddness!
I've also been having similar issues with my recently acquired Mac Pro (Late 2013). Did the hardware test, nothing. Took it to Apple, they said everything was fine.
Just out of curiosity, when you start up your Mac do you get any weird digital effects on the Logo screen? Like this
