Default New metering - what is useful for gain staging?

How do you guys use the new metering options in PT 11HD for proper gain staging? I wonder if its useful to switch the track metering to VU to get a more analog like metering experience. Or would be meter like Venue the better choice, because it shows the peaks better ?

I believe the default is Digital VU for channels right?

That's what I use. It forces you visually to resist the urge to drive levels up like you did with those nasty, super fast peak meters PT used to have.

You set the levels just like you always did (make it "look" good on the meter) and provided that you don't mind your waveforms being a little smaller, all is well in digital land!!

I go between the legacy Pro Tools and K-20 mostly.
I do use analog VU's on my final mix out (Not Monitors) Which keeps me pretty tamed and are pretty much in line with what the PT's VU variation is.

I use the Pro Tools Classic metering option. My main use of meters is to quickly see what track has signal or not and that's about it. It's the ears from that point on.

VU all the way, and only to glance at the global balance, ears (as shane stated) does the 95% of the work.

Can someone explain to me how your ear tells the difference between -20dBFS and -6dBFS unless your control room volume is calibrated?

The OP asked about individual tracks which to me points to basic setting of levels. How do your ears do that?
