I'm actually just considering using multitrack on my computer via a MGB anyway. Some parameters I feel are nicer to adjust with a mouse anyway. Also, it it crashes I could just set up a macro that bypasses all inserts.

It's up to you to decide if you like the idea of compact, tested system that saves your snapshots and show files into a single file to recall no matter what plugins you run or it's more important for you to have only that particular manufacturers plugins running and you don't mind carrying extra hardware around and you don't mind recalling/saving snapshots/show files on two systems and you don't need deep and easy Pro Tools integration.
It's a tough call.

I've always fantasized about setting up my own FOH. I'm running an SD9 right now and despite it's much smaller size, it's still kind of a drag to set it up and down every time.

Maybe some of the other plugs are worth a look. I just hate not being able to use my investment in Waves.

What are the Waves plugins that you use the most? the indispensable ones?

Fortunately many of these can be replaced, my favorite Waves plugin - RenBass in the other hand cannot, I really miss it :/

L2 style limiting - Pro Limiter/Avid, LM4000/McDSP, Oxford Limiter/Sonnox
Multiband comp/DynEQ - Mc2000/McDSP, AE400/McDSP, Pro Multiband/Avid
Classic compressors - Classic compressors bundle/Avid, 6030 Ultimate Compressor/McDSP
Transient tool - TransMod/Sonnox
Bus comp - Impact/Avid

.. and don't forget that All The Digital EQ's Are The Same :) :)

I know what you mean, I have Mercury and Platinum, both TDM. Mercury I use in the studio, so it's not completely wasted, but Platinum is just sitting... somewhere.

It looks like some of those plugins aren't on Avid's list. Can you use any AAX DSP 64 plugin with the S3L system and have it be stable?

Witch ones you mean? To be honest I have not checked the Avid list... I know Sonnox and McDSP have S3L installers McDSP Downloads and Sonnox downloads Everything other than that should be Avid and should have proper installers available too.

Here's the listL https://www.avid.com/plugins

However, it looks like on McDSPs side, they have qualified all their plugins to work on the S3L.

"Take the power of McDSP plug-ins from the studio to the stage, and back again, with the release of Avid S3L support for all McDSP HD v5 plug-ins. McDSP has qualified all its AAX DSP plug-ins to operate on the S3L systems, and even added a few improvements to better support the S3 control surface. McDSP plug-ins like the new AE400 Active Equalizer, and bundles like Live Pack and even Everything Pack, now include support for this new modular, networked live sound system from Avid."

Don't worry about the list, I don't think there is anyone actually updating that list
