Default mxl 2001 mic

just picked one up haven't tried it yet, but does anyone have one of these? if so what do you think? and also i can't figure out the damn microphone mounting system, comes with this mount that screws onto the top of the mic stand but i can't figure out where the damn mic sits, driving me crazy already.

I ended up getting one free somehow from GC. It's OK. Too bright for me though. Maybe good for acoustic.

If memory serves, you unscrew the bottom of the mic (The round then metal peice at the mottom). The mic should then sit in the mount. Re-screw on the metal peice and the mic will hold.
Very simular to some of the mounts that come with Rode mics.

I got one in a set with the small D 603s.
Nothing really to write home about, but I do use the 603
allot.

Last time I threw the 2001 up was to record a summer thunderstorm. Didn't think twice about taking it out
into a high humidity environment.
So I can't say, for the price, it's useless.
My overall impression is "dull".

The Studio Projects B-1 has placed the bar pretty high
for the under $100 dollar category... at least in my
studio.

Still, 15 years ago, I would probably have felt pretty
good about parting with a few hundred bucks for the 2001.
Guess it's all relative.

There are a couple pretty interesting mod sites pertaining to this mic, for what it's worth.
Here's one:

it is a really bright, brittle sounding microphone, but it is somewhat decient for acoustic guitar, or for guitar cabnets or strings.

Aparently, we're giving example to very poor quality control here.
My 2001 is anything but brittle.
Dull, dull, dull.

Maybe if we put our two together, we'd get a balanced mic...

i have 2 of these mic's there not bad for starting mic's i do like them on guitar cab when i'm using my TLM103 for something else, but they are not the greatest, but get the job done if you don't have the budget for expensive mics at the moment
