5.1 surround mix for feature film
Hello everyone, I'm about to start a 5.1 mix for a feature film. I'd like some advice or recommendations from the forum
Most of the movie is ADR, any tips on EQ, reverbs, etc? Also general 5.1 tips or do's and don'ts The movie is gonna go the DCP and DVD, any tips on delivery files? what to send to the LFE? General output level info? Thanks a lot in advance. |

Re: 5.1 surround mix for feature film
There are a lot of questions here. Try to be more specific with a post. If you don't mind me saying it rather comes across that you don't know very much about what you are doing and you want everyone to tell you how to do it. A bit like " I have a guitar. Anyone have any tips on how to play like Jimmy Page? What notes do you use in a solo? What amps should I buy. What keys are the best songs in. Etc
Now if you were to ask "I have a song in C major. should I play a B minor scale over the dominant chord? You would get a raft of response.

Re: 5.1 surround mix for feature film
Hi Mike. You are right, I was not very specific about my post. I've been mixing post for many years, but totally new to 5.1, thats why I made my question kinda broad. Also most of what I've done is for advertising and some long format documentaries, etc, but again never a feature in 5.1
I just wanted to get some info from more experienced 5.1 mixers, and things I should watch out for as I go on in this project. I could probably narrow down my question to: -the do's and don'ts of 5.1(for someone new to 5.1) and delivery files and levels. Any insight on that? Thanks again |

5.1 surround mix for feature film
If you don't know these things, how did you get the job??? Pass it on to someone who knows what he or she is doing, watch, listen and learn. Your questions can't be answered on a message board.

Re: 5.1 surround mix for feature film
Where do we start ?......
What frame rate is it shot at Who are you delivering to in what format? What are your deliverables? Why only 5.1 if feature? What stage are you mixing at?

If the questions are that broad, it just doesn't make any sense to reply on a message board. That being said, I always help out fellow sound people who come to my studio! And my advice was actually a good one since this is how I learned most of what I know: watch how more experienced people do the work. |

5.1 surround mix for feature film
No one is being unhelpful here. Just making suggestions of how to get a better response and find more information out. In a tactful way - rather than just posting " google".

Years ago one would watch from the sidelines as an assistant or A2. Now everyone on the boards like this are instant experts and are willing to tell you how to "do it" in 3 sentences or less. I am extending my time to "Finalmixaudio" to spend a few more minutes talking to him and answering his exact questions. I help out people who can't journey across town or across the US to "The Dub Stage". Different approach I guess.
