Sometimes it's MIDI notes (outside of the instrument range). Sometimes you can do it with Program Changes, which you can insert into a CC lane on the Instrument/MIDI track. +1 for VI's with key-switching features.

Or if you're using piano roll to trigger the VI you can enter notes on those designated keys at the points where you want the articulation to occur.

I actually do not like key-switching as an articulation controller. If you decide to transpose an entire track or set of clips (change key for a singer's register or to make a transition smoother) you may forget (I have) that you had those key-switches in there, and suddenly everything plays back all cattywumpus. I try to re-map anything I can to use Program Changes, but some instruments stick with key switches. That's one thing I do like about the "Expression Map" idea - once you create the map, the instrument can still "use key switches" but that data is not presented in the Expression Map "CC lane" as such, so it won't be affected by any track/song transposition that you do.

I've yet to learn about Expression Maps but can see how that would be a more flexible option based on the reasons stated.
