Default Original Mbox

I just got a new MacBook Pro w/OS 10.6.3 and am upgrading to PT8. I just found out my Mbox won't work anymore with 8.0.3 (thanks Avid). Will 8.0 work on OS10.6.3? That's the last version to support the original Mbox. If I new I had to upgrade my Mbox I would've just bought one and not paid the $150 for the software upgrade. Will PT8 run without any hardware?

That bites man......maybe you could talk to someone at Avid, in CS, and see if they will credit something towards a new hardware/system in lieu of you buying that upgrade not knowing your Mbox was dropped and it would not work. The Mbox 2 Mini is only $250 and comes with the latest version of Tools and some nice plug in's and VI's. It's only 2 inputs though....one XLR and one 1/4".

I am not sure if 8.0 will work with 10.6.3 but either way it has been troublesome for many I think. It seems to me everyone is going to 8.0.3.

Eleven is pretty nice, great as a guitar solution.

003's have been seen going at very good prices also and 002's can be had for cheap on eBay etc.

Who knows when 002/003 will bite the dust though? Yikes!!!

Good luck.

Your best solution might be to buy a new MBox and spin off the unopened software pack on ebay

Over the years, if you are always on a budget like myself, I found it best to never upgrade to the latest stuff. PT always lacks a bit regarding OS releases and you can find yourself without a working system fairly easily.

Briefly, I bought a bran new MacBook Pro 17" and was running Snow Leopard. To run my orig. Mbox and PT, I created 2 new partitions using disk utility (you can do this without worry of losing your data actually, but do a backup just in case).

I am running PT 7.4.2.cs4 so, I installed leopard (10.5.8) on one of the extra partitions. Though I don't have all the latest/greatest stuff, I feel like I am in music creating heaven. I won't do any more upgrades at all on this setup.. so until some hardware fails, I am running uninterrupted as far as techy problems go.

When my machines do fail, I'll simply do the same thing.. buy/install the latest stable working environment, then won't change it until the next hardware failure!

This is my new strategy after 10 years or so of running PT. ;-)

HTH,
Donovan

I 100 per cent agree with that last statement. NEVER upgrade to the newest version of Mac OS. Wait half a year at least, if you need.
I did the same thing : I had to buy MBox 2 mini. Actually it wasn't bad thing, since MBox 2 mini is sleeker, does the same thing as the original MBox, plus I got PT 8 included in the package ( 150 bucks of software itself). I paid less than 300 for the whole thing brand new.
I gave away original MBox to one of my students...

P.S. I've tried to move to Logic... Back in PT 8. Too many things to learn, too little time. My latest PT 8 system is stable.
002 R. Mac i7 27inch 2.8 GHz quad, 8 GB RAM, 2 TB HD. FW 800 LaCie external drives, Giga Studio on custom build PC, MOTU Midi express XT. PT LE 8.0.3. Snow leopard 10.6.2
No upgrades for the next few months at all, if ever !!
