Default slow playback after editing/consolidating

hi , i dont know if anyone else gets this problem but after cleaning up regions by consolidating and then getting rid of unused regions i often get my pc slowing down a lot, theres normally a huge wait for a track to playback or it wont play at all. this is without running many plug ins too. i'd put it down to poor pc performance but restarting the pc remedies the whole situation. although that is an answer in itself i'd be greatful if anyone knows another solution?

im running pro tools 6.9 with and amd 2800 with a gig of ram if thats any use to anyone

thanks for any info in advance

I'd chalk that up to insufficient RAM. 1 Gig should be plenty, but then 6.x is a RAM hog. If you can upgrade to 7.0, that will probably solve it. Otherwise, you may need another half a GB of RAM.

Next time it happens, open your Task Manager (Clt+Alt+Del), switch to the Performance tab, and look at the "PF Usage" meter. It will tell you how full RAM is, and whether the CPU is having to rely heavily on hard disk page files for virtual RAM.
