Default Bye bye roomy dialog.

If you haven't done so yet, do check this plugin out:

http://www.zynaptiq.com/unveil/

It accomplishes the de-verbing task pretty convincingly.
If you deal with dialog, you should definitely check it out.

After some gentle pressure to the developer on GS, they finally have an AAX/RTAS version.

Used it on "Cloud Atlas" a bit. Pretty amazing tool. Even better now that it's AAX.

I think it's the first de-reverberation plugin that deserves that name. You can get roomy dx down to almost dead dry. Depends a bit on the material and the amount of additional static noise tied in with the reverb. The less noise the better.

It's very CPU-hungry so better to AS the clips once you found a good setting. Due to a restriction of the AS-requirements there's no preview button in the AS-version but you can work around that by finding the setting in AAX and then paste that to the AS window.

It takes some time to get used to the parameters. The manual contains some hints for starting points. At first I thought, it's not doing anything but when you understand the parameters you can do pretty extreme stuff. And it doesn't sound digital at all. No space-monkey-artifacts even when you hit it hard.

Definitely worth trying. Quite a mile-stone-tool for DX-mixers/editors.

Frank.

Totally different approach. SPL sounded to me like an expander/gate sort.
This one has a whole new trick.

*grin* Actually, the pressure wasn't needed as AAX was on the roadmap anyway

Thanks for starting this thread!

As Vedat pointed out, the two use very different technology, and the results are thus also very different.

UNVEIL uses pattern recognition and a proprietary de-mixing engine to discern and isolate reverb components (as well as other signal components that human perception classifies as insignificant, like "mud" in a mix etc), then allows you to crossfade between the two using the FOCUS parameter. This approach does not touch signal dynamics, and removes reverb even from *within* a sound.

The SPL tool is essentially a sub-set of the Transient Designer feature-set, it allows you to scale the sustain/release part of a recording, not unlike a downward expander but with a time constant. It is a very useful tool (I'm actually a huge fan of all designs by Ruben Tilgner, the guy who invented the Transient Designer while he worked at SPL, and who now runs his own company Elysia), but a) it will not remove reflections during a sound (only in the gaps between sounds), and b) it changes the amplitude envelope of the input signal, too. Kind of like riding a fader. Also it won't let you remove or attenuate the *direct* signal like you can with UNVEIL (for matching reverb amounts between different mics, simualting on-screen/off-screen, or for upmixing stereo to quad by sending direct components only to the L/R and reverb only to the Ls/Rs).

Any more questions: just let me know!

Doesn't seem to work too well on music though; I had an excessively roomy soprano sax track delivered to me, and tried this plug on it with high hopes; couldn't really get any significant reverb reduction...

YMMV,
rich

Hmm, well actually it does work with musical signals rather well. You do need to adjust parameters to fit the signal, and there can be some learning curve involved as there are no threshold/ratio/release type parameters. Feel free to email me a snippet of that file and I'll make you a setting that works.
