i would get the Spirit M series from soundcraft, the one with 8 mono channels and 4 stereo channels. It has much nicer mic pres than the 001, and has direct outs on every mono channel, plus the main outs can use a s/pdif output, so you could have 8 mics going through the direct outs, while a synth module goes through the s/dpif outs while being connected to a stereo channel.

The eq is not bad either, the 8mono 4stereo model is about $1,000.00 while the 12mono 4stereo model is about $1,250.00

It would be easier to suggest something appropriate if you could delineate what your requirements are in this mixer! The Soundcraft is good stuff.

IMO, you'd want it to be automated if at all possible. That leaves two main choices - Behringer's new digital board, or the Yamaha 01V.

Personally, I'd suggest the Yamaha.

Get a lightpipe card for it (MY8-AT) and you can easily send the Yamaha's preamps out, via lightpipe, and into the Digi 001.

forgive the newbie question please

but what is a lightpipe?

and i only need it for guitar (line in and mic), vocals (2),keyboard (midi or guitar cable) and 2 more mics (one for accoustic recording and one for my talkbox)......so a 8 input mixer woyuld be fine

thanks agin for your help

Lightpipe is optical, otherwise known as TosLink (invented by TOShiba)... runs S/PDIF or ADAT signals, also TASCAM's digital code, which name I am spacing on right now.
OK we're getting someplace. Do you own a 001 now? Are you hot on outboard controller/automation or no?

I would wait and see, or rather, hear what the 002 has to offer, I bet the pre's will be way better than anything that you could get in this price range + 8 automated faders and pan pots + Total control over PTLE + Onboard FX + Plug-ins + firewire + It will be about $1500+the sell price of your 001. Add all of that up, carry the nine, and it = Have some patience baby.

The soundcraft will probably produce a slightly clearer sound than will Mackies... that said, I know Mackie will last for-ever, and they have a couple units that will bring in the bacon for $900 or more under your budget.

The CFX-12 features:

32-bit EMAC real time effects
Effects include 16 selections with variable parameters
Eight mic/line mono channels w/pre's,
Two stereo line channels
3-band active EQ with swept mids on mic/line channels
4-band active EQ on the stereo channels
Two aux sends with pre/post switching
Bus assign switches
PFL solo switches
Audiophile-quality, nine-band stereo program equalizer
Separate tape inputs and outputs... not bad for $600

Or consider the 1402VLZ:

Eight high-headroom inputs on four stereo faders
XDR® pre-amps on six mic inputs
Phantom power
60mm log-taper faders
Two aux sends with level, pan, and PFL solo
Four stereo aux returns plus effects to monitor
Three-band active EQ
75Hz Lo Cut for stage rumble
ALT 3/4 stereo bus acts as mute or 2 more Bus Outs

(Probably available for $500 street... I've had a 1402 that's worked flawlessly for 5 years and is still in use.)

See if you can audition both the Soundcraft and Mackies side-by side at a local G.C....
