Metal Drums - elastic audio or beat detective?

I'm pretty new to all of this, my band has gone some drum tracks recorded, we're in the process of editing and doing some replacement on them.

Next up will be looking at either elastic audio or beat detective.

What is the community's stance on these 2 features? Which one is better suited for taking something like this:

I'll save you some time. Don't use elastic audio. Use Beat Detective. Only use elastic audio if a fill is really off time and you have to use elastic audio. EA causes all sorts of phasing issues. I have a quick tutorial on beat detective (link below) and there are dozens of other good ones on youtube. Good luck.

I don't know what "comped" means. Or making sure that they are "grouped".

And you are talking about the drums needing to be on the beat. In the music we do, the drums ARE the beat. The drummer isn't playing to another instrument. The drums are establishing the beat. So when I am looking at the drum tracks, there isn't anything else in there to line it up to. We're starting from the ground floor. The drums are level 1.

"comped" = track compositing (manual page 618)
"grouped" = track grouping (manual page 245)

Compositing = doesn't apply to me here. All of my audio was recorded elsewhere and I imported the waves into pro tools.

Grouped = The drums are the only tracks I have. So all my tracks belong to the same group.

Hey man. I hear you. But it sounds like you didn't record the drums to a click. If that's the case just work with what you have. In the long run you will be happier.

Grouping is done so all of the tracks are moved at the same time. If you don't group your drums you will create all sorts of phase issues and it will sound really bad. Comping is basically another word for editing. It's when you take a section from one take and "comp" it together with another take. You do that to make the best master take you can. After you have that you can worry about beat dective or EA.

You would definitely benifit from getting a good dvd tutorial on protools. It will go a long way. Just remember the more you edit the more you run the chance of running a take that has lots of character. Check out amazon for dvd's. There are a tone. Maybe someone here can recommend one?

the drums were recorded to a click. But I don't have a click track in with my drum tracks if that's what you mean. I suppose I could make one at the appropriate tempo and line it up to the beginning of the drums. Where the drummer was most likely on target.

Does beat detective move things to another audio track (the click) or does it move it to a grid? I assumed it sliced things and then snapped them to a grid like quantizing midi. No click needed. Just line up the drums as best as you can to the grid and have the tempo set correctly.

Not true?

And yeah, I'd love a recommendation on a pretty comprehensive DVD.
