Core Audio not working with other apps

I recently upgraded to 10.5.4, and pro tools to 7.4.2 and Core audio won't engage when quick time or a web browser opens, limiting the playback of anything other than Pro Tools to the computer speaker. What is screwed up here. Did not find any prefs to default coreaudio as the audio out. Whats Up? What simple thing am i missing?

Have you checked the AMS setup! is it set to digidesign coreaudio?
Also you could try trashing the prefs for the AMS setup. user/library/prefs

if you do a search, you'll find many related threads in many forums talking about this.
known issue, only workaround is to open sys prefs in apple, go to sound pane and toggle between line out and digi output.
or better, if you have optical ins and outs on your system, connect your interface out to your optical in on your mac; under hardware setup create a path for the optical in, then make an aux trak in tools,
assign the proper input and you can have your apps and eat them, too

Well that is the problem. Digidesign is not showing up as an option in the Audio Midi Set-up or in the Sound Pref window. For some reason, that part of the software did not load. Is there a download for this?

It's part of the Pro Tools installer. Run the 7.4.2 installer again and check 'Core Audio' on the Custom Install page...
