Default Faint electric smell from Eleven Rack - normal?

When my ER has been running for a few hours there is a faint smell from the unit if I stick my nose up around the display (left side)

I would describe it as an "Electric smell" - can only smell it up Close.

Can anyone else confirm that you unit has the same smell?

What could it be - ozone? does consumer Electronics like the ER create ozone?

Its normal. As long as its not a burning odor and as long as the 11R is not getting hot to the touch. You'll get the same smell from almost anything that's electrical, heats up, and has air flow ports - like the PSU from your computer.

Its probably Ozone or oxidation.

This is really a question for a science forum if you want to know more.

Thanks for you input benoni.

I took it out of my rack and the smell is very distinct at the side vents. I guess it's a smell from the transformers and circuit boards when the unit is warm.

Can anyone else co firm that they have this smell? It's not a bad odor - more like typical electronic smell hard tod describe... A little sticky but not unpleasant...

Is it something harmful?

Yes! Your are gonna Die Now

Just kidding, There have been a few posts like this lately about the 11R and a 003 I think but as many have answered, this is what happens when the electronic units gets warm/hot and it isn't dangerous or anything like that.

However, if you see any smoke or if it starts to smell like burnt you should unplug and maybe talk to the dealer where you bought it and see of this is a real problem, get your unit replaced. Our neighbour studio down the street have 4 11R they use for education purposes and even though they aren't used for more than an hour per student theirs smelled like "electric static" and ozone-ish aswell so no need to worry. I would keep an eye on it when used for several hours and never leave it on when you aren't there.

We have 3 oldie synths, one Jupiter 8, one Prophet 5 V3 and a Mini Moog original and all three are MINT condition but as soon as they are hot enough all of them smells like ozone and static electricity. I thought it was old dust and stuff but as we serve them once a year at a specialist dude here in town I then got reassured it was nothing to worry about. Some gear get warmer than others and some smell abit and some don"t.

If you are really concerned I would take it down to your local dealer and have them check it out if that smell gets worse or if it gets too hot to even touch.

Are you in stockholm?

Best Of Luck
Christopher

That smell is from the tubes warming up.

LOL OP's tubes in 11R or my tubes on our awesome hardware synths

Lot's of people have asked this question and it seem like the smell comes after the gear have been used for a while so I honestly think it is quite normal with electronics when used for a number of hours.

Southsidemusic:

South of sweden here (Kristianstad)

Alright so this seems to be a common thing with the 11R? It is that typical electronic "static" smell - but compared to other units the 11R is worse.

My home built desktop computer doesn't give this smell nearly as much as the 11R
