Control Surfaces with PT

I have a Korg Microkontrol that has midi controllers - faders and knobs. Can I use this item with PT6.4? or will PT6.4 only work with Digi products (command-8 and control-24)? In other DAW's there is a function called "assign midi controller" where you select what function you want to automate, choose "assign midi controller", then move a knob or fader and that knob/fader automatically controls the selected function. Also, for people who have used command-8 - is it really worth it (time saving, etc) or do you end up using the mouse most of the time anyway?
