Default Sidechain ADC issues (again)

Hi all

This thing is driving me mad. I'm trying to create the classic EDM sidechain pumping effect but I can't seem to get delay compensation to work properly. The timing is way off. I've looked all over the net (and here on DUC) and I've found ideas here and there, but I can't get this to work right. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction?

The sidechain ADC should be working since I have a HDX system, and I can find the option in preferences, but there is no change with that setting on nor off.

Obviously I can manually offset the trigger track, but that shouldn't be necessary with the oomph of the HDX at hand.

Let's say that I was to manually offset the trigger track to make a temporary solution, how would you go about making sure the timing is absolutely spot on?

Thanks

Pro Tools 10 or 11? How is this routed in the session? If you can, post a screenshot that shows how you've done it.

Doh! Sorry, I am on PT 11.0.2 HDX. But I have had similar problems in PT10 HDX.

Thanks for trying to assess the problem for me.

I have tried with various routings. The one I am at now is a dedicated bass drum track (I call it SCBD) for the triggering. The output routed directly to a mono bus (let's call it SC Trigger) (I've also tried to make a version where I use a send instead). The synths are all routed through a bus to an aux track, where the Dyn3 compressor is inserted and set for sidechain, triggered from the SC Trigger bus.

The synth tracks have various inserts enabled, and that would naturally induce some ADC on those tracks before they hit the aux track. So to try to see if that was an issue, I tried to route all synths to main outputs instead and instantiate the Dyn3 on each synth track. Same delay problem.

I'm quite frustrated because one of the main reasons I splurged for HDX was to avoid messing with ADC on sidechains.

But until I'm finding a solution I have been manually offsetting the SCBD track like this: Audition the SC input of the Dyn3 and manually adjust delay on the SCDB track until it is so close to the main bass drum track that they phase (or cancel with reverse phase). That's quite close, but seriously, HDX should not require this.

What happens if you terminate the trigger signal with a dummy (muted) aux?

In other words, if you use bus 10 for sidechain triggering, you also set the input of the muted dummy aux to bus 10.

Honorable sir, thank you! That did the trick!

I really appreciate the help. I've spent countless hours trying all sorts of solutions.

Stig,
could you tell me, is this a work around, or is this how PT is intended to be setup in this instance?

Jay
Jay, it sounds like a workaround to me, but I'm not sure. I found some info regarding sidechaining plugins, and ADC.

Side chain ADC not working in all scenarios with delay compensation

Thanks, PT Lover! This did the trick for me too. Can't believe this hasn't been fixed. I never had this problem on TDM. And if it hasn't been fixed, why hasn't the workaround been noted on the Knowledge Base in the article describing the problem?! http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...n-of-a-plug-in

Once again, I'm grateful for the DUC community! Don't know where I or Avid would be without them!

Delay compensation for side chains is only available with HDX cards, therefore you would have never had this problem with TDM.
