Improving the signal chain
Hi.
As of now the D-A conversion is done by a Yamaha 01V with a AES/EBU card installed. This mixer now basically acts as a monitor volume controller, and D-A converter. Sad, but true. I've read many good things about Benchmark DAC. Would it be a better solution to hook this unit between the 192 and the sub/monitors? Is it even meant for that? Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Improving the signal chain
In my humble experience, the more accurate the information is that you’re hearing from your monitors, the better the mixes can be.
The DAC1, along with the Mytek Stereo 96 DAC and the Lavry product are all certainly designed with this outcome in mind. They are seriously nice converters for any money. The Benchmark product description actually specifies direct connection to monitors as a ‘feature’ of the DAC 1. So, yes, it’s definitely meant for that. And, don’t forget that you get a really nice headphone amplifier built in as a bonus in the deal. FWIW, in my world … mastering only … putting a converter like this in the monitor chain was an ‘absolutely-definitely-can-never-go-back’ addition. You also asked for suggestions and the only constructive thing I can add is to audition: the Lavry Black DA 10 details here: http://www.lavryengineering.com/index_html.html and the Mytek Stereo96 DAC details here: http://www.mytekdigital.com/products/stereo96dac.htm as well as the Benchmark if you can. FWIW, I ended up running with the Myteks … just a personal taste thing, really not much difference in the real world … and the Lavry wasn’t out at the time. Have fun shopping! Re: Improving the signal chain
Thanks a lot, Paul. Appreciate it.
I read the manual for the Benchmark DAC1 and it's a perfect unit between the 192 and the sub/monitors. Set the 3-way switch on the back to Variable and then the front knob acts as a gain control for the analog outs. I'm still not sure how to set the attenuator ranging from 0-30 db, in 10 db steps. I'm sure my dealer can clarify this. Thanks again.
