Default Re: McDSP Emerald Pack Native - Zero Latency with Pro Tools

I almost never use reverbs so I don't have a great deal of experience with the IR reverbs out there, but I was also surprised to see Revolver beating my cpu. I figured it was because I had very little RAM at the time (only 1GB).

Bigbubbaj/Stiff,

Thanks! I've been having trouble getting a response to this question the past month or so.

I know it's tough to answer this, but do you all think it's even worth taking the chance? I'm on a 1.25 GHz dual G4 with RAM maxed at 2GB, running Pro Tools 7. My sessions are typically what I would consider medium regarding density: 20-25 tracks; Comopressors & EQs on most tracks; 2-3 delays; 2-3 reverbs(I'd use Revolver for the main/longest verb).

What are the chances I wouldn't be wasting my money? Revolver is the difference between me buying the Emerald or Classic Pack. $450 difference.

If Revolver is out of the question, I'll need another Reverb option. Is Revolver being a convolution verb the main reason behind its hunger? If so, any recommendations on a non-convolution verb?

Channel G is only in the Emerald pack...

I got the LE emerald pack for 1050 from Alto Music...

The latest TapeOp had a review that I could not agree with more about Channel G.

IT is the STUFF!

That good huh? Never having mixed on a big console, I wasn't really that concerned with it. Is it the big board sound that I'm just not aware of? What does it do that other good EQ & compressor plugs don't?

I got the same quote from them. And they want $599 for the Classic Pack. An extra $450 is not much for the extra plugins, but I'd be disappointed if I can't use the plug which is the primary reason I'm spending the extra money.

I'll check it out. I've only read the Count article so far. I'm very curious about Channel G now. I always wondered why it was the most expensive of the McDSP plugs.

What I like - its flexible.

You can learn THAT plug and you have 90% of what you need for eq and compression.

keyable/filterable expander /gate... amazing on drums. 0 latency.
The compressor is SO flexible.

I still like CB4s LA2A and Fairchild...

The EQ... it can be "normal" or can "model" API, SSL E, SSL G, and Neve (Amek)

It just give you a lot of flavors in one.

The SSL presets for G Console are SUPERB as buss compressors...

It runs as an EQ. It runs as a comp, and it runs as both.

I just did a mix...and it ended up on almost each of the 48 tracks and busses...

Check out the tape op info... once you get it figured out it is just that good.

You can get a FREE demo... for 14 days and check it out.

When my trial was up, I missed Channel G like a hot ex girlfriend.

Nothing measured up... you get the idea.

Cheers.

Justin

Bezo,

Sorry man, I can't say if it will or won't work. I have never even used a G4. Doesn't McDSP have a demo you can try out? That's always the best way to know...

I kind of agree with bigbubbaj on Channel G, it's that damn good. I'm producing and mixing a bands first album at the moment and the G Console (the Channel G setting for the dynamics and the eq) is in every session. For some reason I've stuck with the API emulation, it sounded so good on the first song I decided to use the same on all the songs. And of course you get Analog Channel which is amazing, the banks etc... Damn it, McDSP rocks.

OK, now I just sound like a sales person so I'll stop right there!

Revolver wants sequential memory, which can and does cause problems in pro tools.
I see a 7074 error VERY frequently, and am speaking with MCDSP about this problem.

I still prefer TL Space, so it has not been much of an issue for me.

I'm very close to ordering Emerald pack, but am concerned about the 7074 error when using revolver. Anyone else experiencing this error., or care to comment on this?

I spoke to McDSP about my issue, and it DOES seem related to the plug itself.

I pretty much still use TL Space as my goto verb...

But the rest of the pack is still totally worth the investment. And they DO tell me they are working on it the last time I called support.

Hope this helps. Revolver aside, you can't go wrong.
