Chris,
You should be able to format them however you want. My hard drives are set up as follows with no problems. The first hard drive is 80 gig, cartition is FAT 32 using 10 gig, the D: partition is NTFS using the rest of this drive. I also have a second hard drive (main audio drive) that is 40 gig and is formated Fat 32. Both hard drives are Western Digital.

If I had it to do over again, I'd make them all Fat 32 because I think the disk utilities run faster on the FAT 32 partitions.

I had that configuration for a while and had realtively no problems with it, but when my system drive crashed, I replaced it with a drive formatted fat32 because my disk recovery program is specifically for fat 32 (Rstudio FAT) I have noticed how the Protools files fragment worse on ntfs formatted drives as well, another reason to get away from them.

As for NTFS recording drives, I could have just defragged a drive, and the first time I saved the session, the file got fragmented killing performance. That really bited.

Alot of people like to keep a back up of their sessions on the system drive, and it will have to formatted the same as your audio drive to do this. You won't be able to move files around between drives if one is formatted NTSF and the other FAT32.

I have my setup arranged this way: dual boot on 30Gb system drive, C partition 23Gb Win 98SE FAT32, D partition 7Gb Win XP Pro NTFS; I made the Win98 partition bigger because 98 is not able to see the NTFS, so I could store files in it that both OSs could acces. My audio drive is FAT32; with this arrangement I have 0 problems and I haven't experienced the fragmentation issue mentioned above.

Hope this helps

This is just simply not true.

If the operating system can recognize both file systems, then moving files between drives is not a problem.

I have NTFS on a couple of partitions and FAT32 on my audio and backup partitions and I move and copy files between any of the drives all the time. The fact that some of the partitions are formatted differently is completely transparent to the user.

Quickdraw is correct. You can move files back and forth with FAT 32 and NTFS formats with no problems.

I stand corrected.

Despite having read that piece of misinformation here at the DUC, I can't help but wonder if it isn't a difference between WIN98SE and XP...

Is it?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yup. It's a difference btween Win9x and XP. Win9x cannot recognize NTFS partitions at all. Period. End of story. If you have NTFS partitions and you're working with Win9x you just plain won't see the NTFS partitions. If you're working with XP (or Win2k) you'll have no difficulty seeing both FAT32 and NTFS partitions.
