Default Adding RAM to a Mac Pro..?

I'm thinking of buying some memory for a friend. he's a musician who uses lots of virtual instruments, so the more RAM the better. At the moment he has a mid 2010 Mac Pro with 12 core Westmere 2.66GH and 6 x 1GB, so i thought that 2 x 2GB would be a nice addition. Quite cheap too.

My friend's system http://store.apple.com/us/browse/hom...co=MTg5MTY5NDQ

The memory I'm thinking of getting him (2 banks of 2GB to fill out the two remaining slots) http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...=KTA-MP1333/2G

The question that arises though is whether his system will actually use this additional RAM if the software doesn't actively choose it.

Thoughts?

Depends on the VI's. If he uses say Trilian, Omnispehere, or any of the ones that can run stand-alone, then rewired in, they each will grab their own memory space and therefore, make use of added RAM.

If they run the VI's in PT, it will only be able to use the RAM made available to PT..

Another method that some folks are using is to run the VI's in a 64 prog such as Reaper, then rewire in to PT..

I'm a bit old-hat with my VI's.. I write what I want (or think I want), print to a track, then disable the VI. I'll usually run no more than 4 or 5 at any one time when writing.

It's all in what you get used to I guess...

You might want to stick with the same size ram pieces. Using 'matched' memory sets will offer the best performance.
