Default Good free metal guitar distortion plugins

Are there any good, free metal guitar distortion plugins for Pro Tools? On my previous recording attempts, I just ran my pedal directly into my Scarlett Focusrite, and it sounded bad. I want to try a virtual distortion rig. Any suggestions for good ones, preferably free?

You can try Sansamp, which is bundled with Pro Tools and is quite good.

Your profile says Pro Tools Solo. Are you still on that? What exact version?

SanAmp is a good start but I'm not sure that you will find much else for free vs a wide range of commercial amp sims out there. Do you have a favorite amp(s) you are interested in? That might help with recommendations.

If you have a current Pro Tools Artist, Studio or Ultimate active subscription or active support program you get Eleven Mk II which is a nice amp sim bundle, maybe not the wildest metal amp sims. https://www.avid.com/plugins/eleven-...mk-ii-the-amps

Mostly wanted to mention in case you qualify for this but have just not installed it yet, but maybe you want to upgrade Pro Tools or subscribe to the Avid Complete Plugin Bundle for ~$50/year that includes Eleven Mk II.

Go to the bottom of the page at https://www.audiority.com/shop/

They have an overdrive pedal and a Marshall amp both free, crank them up and you can squeeze some sweet metal tones out of them! Great quality AAX plugins by the Audiority folks.

Now, they also have two fuzz/distortion pedals, DOOMAGORGON and KLIRRTON GRINDSTEIN, well priced, on sale right now, sorry to tempt you bro but these plugins are pretty much the best Fuzz/Distortion emulations out there that can be used unashamedly with believable results. I was really happy to see these in AAX! Their Pyros multi-mode distortion is insane too.

Then go to the plugin-alliance website and get their insane free 20 plugin collection (there's an MT-2 in there and a ProCo RAT as well as a DS-1)

Let us know how you like these!

www.masseyplugins.com -- THC

It is free demo without pops or silence, but if you want to save presets you need to donate. And I suggest you will, Steven is a one-man company.

The profiled needs to be updated. That was years ago, pre-2020, I was using ProTools First and a Scarlett Focusrite Solo interface. I still use the Scarlett Focusrite Solo, but now use ProTools Studio, because I want to be able to work on more than three songs at once.

In terms of sound, I am just looking for a thick, distorted guitar sound, old school death metal style, though not that "Swedish buzzsaw" sound.

That might actually already be part of my ProTools Studio subscription.
