Default Upgrading to a HD system.

Im looking to upgrade to a HD system and i was wondering, can i get the digi PRE and it take the place of something like the 96 I/O? or do i need to have the 96 I/O in order for the PRE to be recognized by the computer or whatever?

And whats the difference between the accel and a core card? i herd the accel just hads dsp chips and nothing else but is that true?

You need a 96 I/O or a 192 I/O to get audio in and out of protools HD. The core card is the base unit and the accel cards expand the computing/processing power but don't work without the core card. The Digi Pre is an 8 channel mic pre that protools will control thru software. The Pre can be used without protools AFAIK as the front panel allows for all settings to be edited without software.

stoox,
You'll always need the core card to start with an HD setup.
"Accel" simply means that is PCI-E format, and will gain more I/O count.
Additional "process" cards will get you more I/Os and DSP power..and they are optional.
Accel...again is PCI-E and more juice.
The PRE is just that...an 8 channel microphone preamp and it will not replace the 96/192 IO unit.
And yes..it should work independently from the PT HD rig as well.

BTW, all these info is clearly available under the Product Info page
hope this helps,
a
