Default ADAT to AES conversion

Need help. I'm running a Carbon out to a Grace 904b. The ADAT in on the Grace maxes out at 48k. I need an ADAT to AES converter so I can use the 96k output of the Carbon. I'm only finding thousand dollar solutions.

Mutec MC-4 is $799.
RME has the ADI-192 DD (discontinued but check used market)

Or just use analog.

As much as I love a warm RME ADI-192DD... Why you are using ADAT to start with? The Carbon TOSLINK can do S/PDIF at 96kHz so just go straight from that to the Grace 904b. If something else is already using the TOSLINK optical on the 904b then use a cheap optical to coax or AES/EBU converter to get to it's other inputs.

S/PDIF over optical is the way, but there's a problem, documented in another thread, with some external converters not locking to the Carbon. It's worth pinging Mark Corbin if you try this and it doesn't work.

Not an expert, but I use the carbon as the master and sync the clock with a ferrofish pulse16 over BNC. Is this not an option for AES units?

I don't know anything about AES at all, but Carbon doesn't have an AES output anyway, so not sure how it's relevant.

The question was about connecting a Carbon to a Grace904b monitor controller at 96KHz, and a $4 ADAT cable going from optical S/PDIF on the Carbon to the optical S/PDIF on the Grace seemed like the simplest and cheapest way of doing this to me (and seemingly to Darryl too). No need for additional sync in this scenario.

If your question is just a generic one about AES and sync, I have no idea as I've never owned an interface with AES on it.

Yeah same I dont know much about AES, you had said S/PDIF over optical was the way to go, but these units had trouble locking. I was just saying you could lock over BNC unless thats not what you meant. Again, not an expert so I might be confusing topics.

Ah, I see, my apologies. It might work, but the problem I had with connecting my Carbon to an RME ADI-2 Pro fs (over optical S/PDIF) was more some protocol level problem, rather than a plain clocking issue. It was a peculiarity of Carbon to RME, so might not apply to other equipment.
