Default Clean install or update from 2020.3 to 2021.6?

I started getting very weird errors yesterday in PT 2020.3 (I have another post about that). Everything I've tried has failed and I think I'll just move from 2020.3 to 2021.6. I can't afford any more downtime.

I was going through previous posts and found this:

I'm covered regarding #1.

Would #2 still apply going from 2020.3 to 2021.6 and I should clean install rather than update?

I have a few other questions:

Should I install the drivers before installing Pro Tools?
(I think yes, but honestly can't remember.)

Is the DX Driver 8.9.1 for HD only?
(I think all I need is CodecsPE 2.7.3.)

Do I need to install Legacy AIR Creative Collection Effects and Instruments and the Avid Virtual Instruments?
(I have sessions from older (PT12) versions. I think the First AIR bundles replace those, but I'm not sure. I don't want to lose an AIR instrument if I used it in older session).

I've copied these folders to another drive:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign
C:\Program Files\User\User Name\Documents\Pro Tools

I plan to copy those files back to these respective folders after I install 2021.6.

Have I missed anything?
(I want to be sure I have all of my plugins, plugin presets, and track presets. I regularly update the plugins I use a lot; trying to avoid reinstalling all of them).

I truly apologize for all the questions; it's been a while since I've had to do this and it's always daunting.

I'm on a Mac but from what I've read, Protools 2021.6 for Windows 10 does require uninstalling the previous version. It should not require reinstalling plugins as it will rescan them upon startup and recognize them. Some older plugins may not be compatible and be placed into the unused folder.

Thanks. As suspected.

I am still wondering about this part:

I've copied these folders to another drive:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign
C:\User\User Name\Documents\Pro Tools [I had this path listed incorrectly aboove]

I plan to copy those files back to these respective folders after I install 2021.6.

Have I missed anything?

I don’t think you need to copy/reinstall those folders. Just uninstall the old version, install the new version. Somebody chime in if I’m mistaken.

When I update, I backup my Preferences with Trasher, uninstall Pro Tools from Programs & Features and choose to uninstall everything - at the bottom of dialogue window. I reboot, run CCleaner's Registry Editor until it runs clear and install the update, then reboot. If you don't have HD, then there is no need to install the HD driver, although it won't cause any issues if you do. I restore my Preferences with Trasher and start Pro Tools.

All my personal templates remain and are seen, all my extra Avid plug-ins and codecs, even Waves too, I don't need to move anything from/too or install anything but Pro Tools and whatever else the installer contains. Even my command switch for Processor Affinity still works with the new PT icon shortcut.

As an aside, I use CCLeaner to disable Avid Link at start-up and even that setting remains.

As always, YMMV.

Is your PT plan and ilok license allowing you to update from 2020.3 to 2021.6 as that requires a paid plan or subscription. If you are on any plan I will ewcalate asap otherwise you keed to pay for that update.

Thanks so much, The Weed. This very helpful.

Regarding this:

My understanding is that the "Pro Tools" folder located at C:\User\User Name\My Documents is created when Pro Tools is installed, and removed when Pro Tools is uninstalled.

So If I uninstall and reinstall as you've recommended, as an example, the Plug-in Settings subfolder in the PT 2021.6 version will only show the stock Avid presets, and not the presets the user has created. That's what I'm most worried about losing. My recollection is that those user presets must be saved to another location, then copied into the new installation's version.

I've attached an example of what I mean.

Is this not the case?

The update to 2021.6 is clearly shown on the My Products tab in my Avid account, where it says this

Your Software Updates + Support Plan expires on May 13, 2022

All the files are available under my downloads (and I already downloaded everything).

I have annual subscription updates (a Perpetual Plan) until 2025.

In 2019 I bought four one-year renewals before the price went up.

I believe this means that I am good to go.

Please confirm--thanks.

Great! Just need to check as some people update by downloading althought they dont have a valid license plan but as per the PM you have.

I will escalate this and see what is wrong. Weekend at Avid HQ but hope an admin can jump in before monday.

I'm not clear what you think is wrong or what needs to be escalated.

The update is shown under my available downloads and I already downloaded them.

I haven't uninstalled 2020.3 yet and was just waiting to install 2021.6 until I clarified a few things about the process.

Update:
Glad we resolved this via PM. You were just checking to confirm that I'm eligible for this upgrade, which I am.

Thanks for your help.
