Hi Hat Mic
Whats the general opinion of the best high hat mic?
AKG 414? AT 4041? Rode NT5? |

Re: Hi Hat Mic
Out of those three, AT 4041 without a doubt.

Re: Hi Hat Mic
Really, the NT5...i wasn't really impressed by it much in general...actually a little depressed by it...but I can see, thinking back to how it performed on other sources, how it might be an excellent choice for HH. I'll have to try it out again.

Re: Hi Hat Mic
Actually I'm just kidding, I couldn't resist. I like the 4041 out of those choices, have a look at the AT4051 (that's the pre-amp / capsule combination) my one gripe with the 4041 is that it doesn't have a pad. you really need it when micing a HiHat. I also like the 451b (which does have a pad)

Re: Hi Hat Mic
I hate all of those on hats. For me it's a Neumann KM184 all the way.

Re: Hi Hat Mic
Agree with the KM184 as well. Another mic that fits the purpose and has a very flat response is the Shure SM81. I think one of the keys with Hihat mics is to avoid anything that has a midrange bump in the frequency response curve. These bumps make the hihat sound harsh or like it's clanging.
