Are the S1 OLED screens supposed to look like this?
When in channel mode the OLED displays on the S1 have this distracting dotted background (see my attached image). This happens in send assign mode too.
It sort of seems like it might be by design? If so I'd appreciate the option to turn it off because it makes reading the screens very difficult and looks really ugly. |

That shows you it's not in normal mode.

Re: Are the S1 OLED screens supposed to look like this?
Ouch. Doesn't anyone else find it annoying?
I think that some other indicator of channel or "not normal" mode would be better. How about a line of dots just under the track name? Or the letters CH somewhere? Must be a ton of other ways to do this but this dotted background makes the lettering really hard to read. I do use channel mode almost as much as normal mode, but I really can't stand the crazy background! |

Re: Are the S1 OLED screens supposed to look like this?
Oh well, I literally thought there was something wrong with my S1 when I first saw it! I can't speak for anyone else but that was my initial reaction.
It is more difficult to read than normal mode though, and as far as I know I've got very good vision. On top of that it's just so ugly it's distracting. Maybe I need to get used to looking at the pad meter bridge more and the OLED less... Also, I didn't think the S1 was 15 years old so are we talking about old D-commands or something? I'm not very familiar with legacy Pro Tools systems and I'm coming at this after using a UF8 for a couple of years. (HUI is rubbish which is why I switched, but it was a lovely surface in every other way - very clear and nice to use!) |

But the inverted screen even goes back before Eucon/Eucontrol. Command 8 did it, ICON D-Control, D-Command did it, and IIRC, even MCU did it (I definitely remember inverted screens.) Might also be on the C24 and the Digi002. What it comes down to is inverted screens for the digital channel strip have been used forrrrreeeeevvveeer. No one complains because it is so standard.

Re: Are the S1 OLED screens supposed to look like this?
Yes, of course I should have realised the Artist Mix series and S3 of course. The others are all a bit before my time (at least, I wasn't knowledgable enough to know much about it back then!).
However, it's interesting thinking about it now with that information. I have previously owned, and used for a long time ICON Pro X, with extenders, then moved from that to a single SSL UF8 which was leagues ahead. I primarily used both in MCU mode with Logic and occasionally ableton, then switched to pro tools for a lot of work and used the UF8 in HUI mode. I don't ever recall thinking that the displays looked wrong on those controllers in Channel mode. I don't know for sure that they inverted the screen, but if they did it must've looked okay. I think inverting the screens in "not normal" modes makes sense and in theory seems like a good idea. So coming back to the S1 ( and possibly Artist mix and S3?), now the issue I actually have is that it's not really a true inversion of the colours. You end up with Orange writing on an orange background. And you also have these weird little cut out black squares in the lower right of the display (one where the automation indicator is and another above it) as well as the track name which isn't inverted. You also have a black box around the Insert name or letter as on my picture. All this leads to a very cluttered and messy-looking display, that's actually quite difficult (in my opinion) to use. A full, simple inversion of the screen would look great - orange background with black writing etc.. but I don't think that's what this really looks like to me. Just my two cents anyway, I mean it works so I'm sure there more important issues to look into, but if it was easy to make this look a bit better I think that'd make using the thing a lot nicer! |

Orange?
I don't know how your screens could be broken but they are monochromatic black/yellow text (greenish yellow, if you will)
