Default Neumann Monitors

Hello,

A quick question, what's your opinion about Neumann monitors for audio post production, for example Neumann KH 120 II.

My main area of work is dialogue editing but I've started to explore dialogue pre-mixing/mixing as well.

I've read a few reviews and all of them say that Neumann's are very accurate and neutral which to sounds perfect for dialogue work.

Having said that I mainly see Genelecs in the edit rooms and JBL in the mixing theatres so wondering if Neumann's will be a good option.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Tyranor,

we used (and still use) KH120 A a long time in post. Now we use Genelec 8341 in our main rooms. But KH120s are holding up well. You can't go wrong with them. The now integrated room calibration makes them even better.

Best
Maik

just an opinion from a music mixer who's spent a fair amount of time with both brands; I think both the Genelecs and Neumanns are excellent and both are accurate - despite being 'accurate' they have to my ear very different sonic profiles: The Neumanns sound 'softer' to me, and are more pleasing to my ear. I also wouldn't personally go below the KH310s; the 3 ways provide a more pleasant midrange. In short, I don't think you can go wrong with either, but you may have a personal preference for one over the other. I'm assuming you'll be in at least a 5.1 setup, but if not, and you go with the smaller ones (of either brand), you'll need a sub for dialog editing to hear pops, etc...

I use these for near field when editing and mixing DX. I like the Neumann KH120's, but the PSI has a fantastic midrange and picks up on sound issues on dialogue easily, which I feel is a great help with cleaning dialogue (almost like headphones If you can, give them a listen - a bit more expensive than the Neumann.

I have PSI 21 (LCR) and 17 for LsRs and a Trinnnov Dmon

It doesn't matter what I think - it what you the OP thinks. Just because I like Nikon doesn't mean they will suit you more than Canon etc. I like Marmite...so I dont understand the validity of "what I like"

However the science...I have tested Genlec 8341 for 2 months for Resolution magazine review. These are great monitors. GLM software is too weak and is no Trinnov.
PSI monitors are more phase accurate than Genelecs - period. I measured them!
Neumann are ok - but for me, if you earn your living doing this, you are therefore are a professional and should have professional tools. Would you go to a surgeon with "ok" scalpels in a clean-ish room? Get top level monitors not meh ones, treat your room as best as you can, then get a Trinnov (lifetime investment) to sort out the bits that physics can't (bass in small rooms).

Sell a child, mortgage your granny, and buy once...

I work closely with a post mixer who uses a lovely little Neumann 5.1 setup. He swears by them, and his work is always tremendous. If they are in your budget, I don't think you can wrong.

I have a pair of KH120s as a second reference for ATC25As. They lack the forensic midrange detail of the ATCs but hold up incredibly well given the massive price difference.

Hi, I'm having a Neumann/K&H O300 5.1 setup. They are fantastic speakers, you will hardly find any loudspeaker producing such a clear phantom image with human voices. And the KH120 II have an amazing bass response not only for their size.

Maybe it's interesting to know that the predecessors of the KH310, the Klein&Hummel O98 and O300 were made to the specs demanded by German public broadcasters. The KH310 still are standard there.

The only shortcoming I find is that they don't translate that well to cinema sound systems. However you can get around that with a speaker calibration software like Sonarworks.
