MBox driver prevents avid from launching

I don't suppose anyone is having this problem: i have avid xpress dv 4.6 on my system, and when i try to launch it, it quits at the exact time it tries to initialize audio. And, it seems, as long as the Digidesign HW (MBox) device appears in the sound panel in sys prefs, it refuses to launch. I say this, because for some inexplicable reason, i opened the avid, and it started up, and when i opened the sound panel in sys prefs, the MBox wasn't listed! I don't know why this happened. But it was the only time the avid actually launched. Any ideas?

PS: i am working on a 1.25 gig mac, os 10.3.6, 2 gigs ram, PT version 6.4, avid xpress dv 4.6

Hold down the shift key as you launch XPress Pro 4.6 and it will launch without problems.
