Default D-Control Display Groups On Custom Faders?

Is there a way, without assigning VCA's, to have the group masters appear as custom faders on a D-Control? I'd like one fader (NOT rotary encoder) to be group a, one to be group b, etc. Couldn't find it in the manual... thanks!

I'm not sure that I understand your question well.

Do you want to see all VCA masters that allready exsist in a custom group or the members or the VCA's ? What kind of 'group masters' are you talking about ? Master faders ?

I'm sure there is some solution to what you want but I would need to know more detailed what it is exactly you want to do to determine wether the solution lies in viewing track types / or custom groups / or viewing grouped tracks etc ...

I don't understand where the rotary comes into play. Just to make sure we're on the same page ... :

- a VCA IS a group master and it's members can be controlled from the encoders on the channelstrip the VCA is on or can be spilled out on the faders etc ...

- There are other track types that can be used to operate as group masters : an aux or masterfader for example.

Please elaborate a bit on what exactly you want to do.

Thanks

Wait a minute .... LOL .... I think I might just have figured out what you're trying to say : on fader to group A ... one to group B etc ... right ?

So you're talking about allready existing groups right ? And you want a fader to control those tracks ?

But that IS what a VCA is supposed to do and unless you assign that group to a vca ... how would you want PT or the controller to know that ? There are situations were I would NOT want a group to be controlled by a fader. An edit group for example that holds members that might may or may not be assigned to mix groups in their turn etc ... so unless I actually tell PT that I want a certain number of tracks to be controlled by one master fader (a vca for example) I for one would definitely NOT want PT to assign a fader to a group by default ...

Is that what you were asking ?

Hey Chris,

Thanks for taking time out to answer my question.

OK, say I have a session that has the following groups:

a - drums
b - bass
c - guitars
d - keyboards
e - etc, etc... for a total of say 20 groups

Now, there are NO VCA groups set up. And say I don't want to take the time to set VCA groups up, as the tracks are already in groups. Is there a way for the custom faders to show the groups on the faders, i.e. fader 1 of custom faders controls a - drums, fader 2 controls b - bass.

My point is, without having to set up VCA's, why can't the title of the group show up on a custom fader and control the level of that fader?

I think there is no way to do what you're saying without VCAs, but why wouldn't you spend the 1 or 2 minutes required to setup VCAs to do EXACTLY as you want? For your trouble you get another layer of automation you can use plus the ability to control group members both on pots or spilled out as Chris suggests. You're making things harder on yourself by not going the VCA route!

What you are trying to do IS what VCA is designed for.

Now ... again ... the main question for me in this would be : Do I want to see a master fader of any kind or a vca attached to a group by default. Because that is what you are asking. In my case that would be NO. I would NOT want PT to assign a master automatically to every group I create.

Like I have said before ... not every group I make ends up assigned to a vca. I do make a distinct difference between edit and mix groups for example and even not all mix groups necessarily end up on assigned to a vca.

I can see however where you come from, which is why I think that it would make up for a nice feature request : which would be that WHEN you create the group ... you have the option to automatically create a vca master to which that group gets assigned to. That yes ... would be in some situations a time saver. But it should be an option ... not a user preference ... not a default thing.

a) I am lazy
b) I have many, many sessions that would need to have this done.

But, yes, you are correct. I would just take some work on my part, or, see below....
